Anyone else see the news report about the girl who wore her contact lenses for six months straight?? Not able to c&p the link right now but should show up on google.

Basically bacteria ate her eyes. DDDDD:

I'm gonna have nightmares tonight I swear.

I read that. But I just wonder: How the hell do you not notice? Surely you get discomfort before your eyes get eaten alive?

How? Did she not take them out ever?

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

Nope. Even slept and went swimming in them.

No article seems to say why though. Really can't understand it.

And that, kids, is why I wear glasses. They may be clunky, but by god at least this kind of shit can't happen.

thiiiiiiiiiiissssssss so much this

I also won't get laser, as I know of one guy who went in to lose his glasses, they misaligned the laser, and he didn't realize they had destroyed the optical nerves in both eyes, until after he'd had both done...and he could see NOTHING. And it wasn't going to get better. EVER.

Oh, Jesus, what the hell. I'd already started to second guess my one-day-in-a-few-years plans for laser, but that just killed it in the gutter; I had no idea that was even fucking possible. Hope he sued them stupid.

Oh he got full disability and the services for the visually impaired here are absolutely stellar; but still, HE WENT BLIND. All in all, he accepted it, because, eh, what are you going to do? But yeah. Ain't nobody shooting my eyeballs up with radiation, no thanks. Glasses are a pain and a bother sometimes, but the minor inconvenience/annoyance is NOTHING compared to going totally blind, the idea of which freaks me out no end.

True, no amount of money can make up for losing a sense due to a totally elective procedure. Fuck that, my eyes may not work well, but they work, so no special procedures unless that changes.

DA

I too wear glasses, but wearing contacts has improved (if not the definitely halted, thank God, the deterioration of my eye sight). However, i can understand the fear of lenses and lasers--i think i'm not down for laser.

it's always a bummer waking up from a nap and realizing you can see and then realizing it's only bc you're wearing contacts. :[

Yeah, I may still give contacts a try just for the novel experience of not fumbling for my glasses, but I will disinfect the unholy hell out of those bitches first.

I also wear glasses, and it's a good thing too. I was in a really bad car accident a few years back, actually got ejected from the windshield, and it tore my face all to hell. My glasses, though, had steel frames and shatter proof lenses, and probably saved my eyes (the frame did leave a bit of an imprint in my nose and such, but that's still relatively minor.)

Glasses can be mini safety goggles under certain circumstances. :)

Oh, wow, I'm gonna tell this story to the next person who's like "why don't just get contaaacts", like "well, contacts don't save someone's eyes from windshields do they". (Also, glad you made it out relatively okay, anon!)

And here I was just giving thanks that they protected me from kiddo fingernails and wax splatter when blowing out candles. Glad to hear you made it out of that.

I shouldn't have clicked expand, holy fucking hell why did I click expand?! *shivers*

This is unimaginable. Like...nope. Nope.

(Though for gods sake, why would you never take your contacts out? I feel sorry for the girl, but...that just makes no sense. Of course no good can come of never taking them out or cleaning them.)

If I ever need glasses, I'll gladly wear them; ain't no contacts or lasers getting near me.

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
How could she even do that? The one time I accidentally forgot to take out my contacts before going to bed, I woke up with painfully irritated eyes because they had gotten kind of dry overnight and that caused chafing on my eyes and eyelids along the edge of the lenses during REM sleep. Plus, I have monthly disposables, so I wouldn't never wear the same ones for that long, anyway.

Yep. The supreme idiot of the year. Though I can't laugh because it horrifies me more than an anything.

Oh no, that's really horrible and sad. To me that sounds like a sort of... failure in self-care. I can't help but wonder if she was depressed. Either way I feel sorry for her. :c

It definitely makes me afraid to wear contacts, too.

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm gonna go wash the shit out of my contacts now.

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

Don't do it with water anon!!!! It was one of the pointsvraised in the article. Contact lens solution always and forever.

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Um, nowhere did I mention or even imply I was washing with water?

Re: TW: mentions of horrific medical stuff involving eyes

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
My mistake. Still a little freaked out from the article and automatically read 'washing' as 'washing with water'. :/

Sorry, anon, was just really scared for you was all!
