how to (legally) watch The Hobbit?

[personal profile] straightforwardly 2014-07-15 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I'm taking a class on Tolkien this summer, and for one of our essays we have to compare/contrast something (a scene, a character, whatever) between the books and the movies. Which is fine and all, except... I've never seen any of the LOTR or The Hobbit movies.

I was thinking about watching one of the Hobbit movies, mainly because I've picked up some things via fandom osmosis that I think I could write about. But neither of rhe Hobbit movies (nor any of the Lord of the Rings movies) seem to be on Netflix Instant, and I have no idea how else to watch them. I don't want to buy them, because I doubt I'll watch them again and it'll be a waste of money, but I'm not sure how else I can do it. Hence my question.

tl;dr does anyone know where/how/if I can legally stream the Hobbit movies without having to buy it?

Watch it illegally. They've got enough of a profit that it really won't hurt in the slightest :) You don't have to download anything -- someone's undoubtedly uploaded it somewhere.

If not, uh....check Amazon Instant.

Amazon Instant doesn't have it either, except for so much that you might as well buy it, last time I looked.

The LOTR movies are pretty cheap to buy on DVD now though, especially second hand on ebay?

I'm also frustrated by the lack of legal streaming of this series.

Amazon has (cheaper than full purchase) 24 or 48 hour rental options for some movies. Not sure if they have LotR, but I think it's a couple bucks for most movies that have the option.

Also, if you've got a DVD player, you could try the local library. Many of them have DVD rentals, and I'd be surprised if at least one branch in the system didn't have LotR available.

Most laptops play DVDs too.

Also Redbox, or perhaps theirs is a town with one of the few remaining video rental stores (Hastings and Family Video are the only ones that seem to be more or less making it).

Legally? Unlikely. Any streams you see would definitely be in the grey area at least, sort of "illegal but since it's hard to reinforce those laws by hunting down every single stream/torrent, here we are!"

If you have a DVD player or access to one, check to see if your local library has it. Or see if any fellow Tolkien nerds in your area might be up for a marathon. Surely there's one in your class?

I only know some illegal streams. :/ But if you end up using one, send me a PM. There is a website I use that only has HD versions of all of them.

I'm going to add in the library, that's where I watch most of my movies that I can't find elsewhere. My library has interlibrary loan with other libraries in the county so I have access to pretty much anything.

Sign up for a card at your local public library and request the DVD through the collection/ interlibrary loan system. Your library can almost certainly get it for you if they don't own it already.

Redbox has both Hobbit movies I believe. Or you could use the 1970s Hobbit (which some will argue captures the spirit better than the new movie).

Ask your instructor to put something on reserve.

Search on http://www.canistream.it/ to find where you can legally stream movies and tv shows. It's a very handy site :)

Here's the links for The Hobbit and LotR:

Do you have On Demand? You might be able to rent off of it.
