You do? Don't get me wrong, it's one of my top 5 favorite episodes too, but IMO 75% of its amazingness and meaningfulness comes from watching the previous seasons and being familiar with the whole arc to get the context of the slow development of the Dominion War and Sisko's character to reach the point reached in this episode. I would never show it to a newbie.

Heh. I said they're the episodes I want to show people, in the interests of explaining why I madly adore the show. They're not necessarily my first choices for why they should madly adore the show, because yes, they require a lot of context. Actually, "Pale Moonlight" almost requires some non-DS9 Trek context, to explain why it was so defining for this section of the universe.

These are just the episodes I most want to watch newbies watch to see how they react, and so I can then gush at them for half an hour or so.

Ahhh that makes sense! Hmmm...now I'm wondering....what WOULD be a good episode to start a non-DS9 fan on?

Not the first season, for sure. I loved DS9, but when I decided to rewatch it, I could barely make it through S1.
