But what re your thoughts on podfic?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-07-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
So, I recently discovered podfic. I'm probably late to the party as always. On one hand, I'm sort of fascinated by the concept (I always like audiobooks), on the other, I'm not sure.

One thing is that I found it's often the author reading it...so that sort of makes it more person (what can be good or bad). The other is...well, what about porn? I've only listened to gen stuff, but I'm not sure how I feel about an author reading out smut.

Also, from the other end, I wonder if I should ever do podfic. On one hand, it sounds like fun - on the other - well, I have reservations. also slight irrational paranoia about people recognizing my accent/voice.

So what are your thoughts on podfic, F!S?

I like podfic because I like podcasts. Unfortunately, most podficcers use cheap equipment and/or don't understand how to speak in a mic. So those are unbearable to listen to. There have been a couple that I really love to listen to. Sadly they are all in the SPN fandom. :C

I still haven't caved and watched SPN. The funny thing is that on paper it sounds like something I'd like but the fandom makes me doubt that.

They have some good fic. Just watch the first 5 seasons. After that it gets iffy. I wish there were some good podficcers for MCU. I actually have 2 on my phone right now I am going to give a listen to.

Watch the series, ignore the fandom. Seriously. The first three seasons are fantastic. 4th and 5th are great. 6th season and on are hit or miss - I actually still really enjoy them, but I understand why some people wouldn't.

The fandom, however, is batshit crazy. Stay far, far away.

(There are actually some really great fics in the fandom. I just don't interact with the fandom.)

What kind do you prefer?

A compiation of short fics, or a podfic for a fic I've read. I prefer level reading voices without voice acting or sound effects.)

I personally don't particularly care for audiobooks in general, so I've never listened to podfic.

I would totally record some, though.

I love podfic, but I'm lucky in that I have a friend who records it, and I've only listened to her so far. She acted on stage for years, has an amazing audio recording setup, and no qualms at all about graphic sex scenes. She has it DOWN. I know she's a rarity when it comes to podficcing, though.

For me, listening to graphic sex in podfic is fine, because I've listened to it in many a professional audiobook. (Sookie Mysteries, In Death Seres, romance novels, etc). The first few times it was embarrassing, but I quickly grew used to it. Even now, when I hear my friend getting all passionate as she reads the hot scenes, I just giggle and keep listening. XD

My favorite so far is her podfic of "Turn" by Saras Girl. I hope you enjoy them!

I think podfics are good for accessibility.

From experience, I didn't like my sole experience of them. The main problem was that particular story was an American woman reading a fic with the POV of a British man. It was the Harry Potter fandom. The disconnect was too great for me.

Also, reading out loud is a highly particular skill that not everyone has.

I love audiobooks and radio plays. I listen to them every day. But my enjoyment is highly dependent on the voice actor being skillful and well-cast. I wouldn't care if it was porny or not, as long as the acting was good.

I think people might recognise your accent/voice if you did podcasts. Voices are unique, unless you can do different accents.

I kind of feel about as meh about it as I do about audiobooks. Generally not my thing.

On the other hand, I recently heard a really, really hot AOS Kirk/Pike smut podfic that hit buttons I didn't know I had and made me interested in the pairing. So sometimes I do like it. Not sure if the author read it or not, though it was a woman reading it. But it didn't matter. She got the inflection just right and did different voices for each character and it just worked.

I think podfic readers are mostly women. Almost always.

I like it, but I'm pretty picky about voices. I used to load up my mp3 player with podfic when I was working third shift retail and during a certain period of my life it helped me get to sleep when I was anxious.

Hmmm I should go on a podfic spree, I think.

As for reading, I've done drunken/dramatic readings and recorded them, but I would never upload them as podfic because they have a lot of giggling and are usually meant for the amusement of the shit stream.

I like it when people record themselves reading my fic. Giggling and other background noise is okay because pretty much all of my fic is crack.

I like them, but don't listen to them much. I only download podfic of stuff I've already read and enjoyed enough to know I'll want to experience it again. I don't listen to just any podfic because overall I prefer reading, and don't want that many of them taking up space on my hard-drive. But it can be cool, yea.

The first thing that comes to mind is Welcome to Beacon Hills. Yes it's a WTNV inspired 'radio show', but you don't need to listen to WTNV to understand it. (Only Teen Wolf.) I greatly enjoyed the first episode. (And don't think I ever listened to number two, so now I'm gonna download it. Wheeeee.)

I love the concept of them, and they are convenient for people who would listen to them.

But not for me.
