Eh, I've spent a good chunk of my life being inspired by certain NES games, as an artist and just in general.
There are one or two that I want a sprite of on my body. And no, it's not your standard fare Zelda / Mario / etc.
The only reason I haven't gotten them, already, is just because I want to find a tattoo artist that is really good at precise pixel work.

If someone still wants to pass judgement on me for that, for something that has been a huge inspiration to me for almost 30 years, then my fucks are not to be given. My priorities are in better order than that.

This is also why I don't pass judgement on fandom tattoos.
You can't possibly know the depth of the meaning behind them, unless that person actually tells you.

Why do people keep pulling out the "depth of meaning" card as if that somehow makes something less ugly-looking? If it looks ugly, it looks ugly regardless of whether the person got it just because they liked butterflies or because it reminded them of their dead grandmother.

The secret didn't say "ugly".
It said "trashy" and "embarrassing."

Also, the "depth of meaning card" goes pretty hand-in-hand with reasons not to care if someone finds your tattoo unappealing.
So someone can find it ugly all they want.
But ain't nobody give a shit.
