The thing with Ripley is that she was a mother before she left on the trip shown in Alien. She missed her daughter in the regretful sense. At least some of her most badass scenes in Aliens was motherly reaction to Newt being in danger.

That doesn't stop her from being badass, and she was still badass after Newt was killed (if you can stand to watch Alien 3).
