Period Affecting Sense of Taste?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not think this is TMI enough to collapse. Sorry if the very word "period" makes anyone disgusted.

Anywho, does anyone here ever have changes in their sense of taste when on their period? It's really common for me to have a stronger sense of smell around that time, but this is the first time taste seems to be off. I know the two senses are related, and I know one acting up is definitely my period, so why not the other.

It's small changes. My morning vanilla yogurt tasted kind of like brown sugar, and not as sour as usual. I just had a bowl of ice cream and I feel like I missed the creaminess. Anyone ever experienced this?

Your sense of taste is directly affected by chemical makeup of your brain, so that makes sense.

That's why foods you hate as a child you love as an adult and vice versa.

I get cravings on my period? Like, pregnancy cravings. I NEED THIS NOW. And not just for the stereotypical chocolate. Usually I'm craving something I don't even like. And then I eat it and it mysteriously tastes good(This is how, at nineteen, I finally began to eat cheeseburgers). So I don't know, maybe it's like when you're pregnant and the things you crave are what your body is lacking?

Same, with the cravings. I get a craving for something sugary right before I start my period - but if I eat something sugary, then I feel sick. And then I realize I'm about to get my period. No idea why this happens, but at least I've realized the sugar cravings are a tip-off.

I haven't really noticed things tasting different, but a lot of things smell like chinese food when I'm premenstrual. I don't know wtf that's about.

I guess everyone has different side effects during period-time. My appetite goes down during that time, so I don't even notice taste, I'm just like "baah... not hungry"

Huh, I've never noticed it, no. (Though there have been times where I thought food tasted odd, I can't remember if that was when I was on my period.)

It does make sense though. The body is weird, man.

(For me, I just have a harder time controlling my hunger. Even if I'm not particularly hungry, I still crave food. I usually resist, but god, it sucks.)

Yep. Infrequently, but yep. Ever since I was pregnant the first time twelve years ago, things will sometimes smell awful or taste weird like they did when I was pregnant.

I take ibuprofen when I am on my period, as long as it is active I can taste it. This makes everything compete with the aftertaste of the medicine. So, no I don't have the same experience as you.

I don't have that but I become really sensitive to noise and smell. Not like Spider-Man, like people talking loudly makes my ears ring and some smells that don't ordinarily bother me make me want to throw up.

I turn into a complete stereotype and crave chocolate, but yeah, some tastes are off. I normally love salty things like crackers, but almost have an aversion to them during the first couple of days. (And generally don't have much appetite during the first couple of days anyway, but that's due to horrible fucking cramps.) Agreed with sense of smell being stronger than usual, I have to keep the windows shut because I can smell people smoking from like a block away.

I know things've tasted funny, or smelled funny. I'm going to pay so much more attention to whether I'm gearing up for a good bleed next time it happens, now...
