Has anyone else ever had a good friend really like/identify with a character you're inclined to dislike, but you have to make your peace with the character if you ever want to discuss the fandom, because your friend would be really hurt if you were hating on the character all the time?

... Noo. I don't think so? There's not many characters I really hate, so I doubt I'd be on the that side of the equation. Though, there are characters I really love, and it'd really suck if my friends hated them.

All the time. I'd hate a lot more characters if it weren't for my friends and I having really different tastes.

I've also learned not to love some characters I used to love because I got used to some of my friends hating them so vocally.

No, but friends have been able to convince me to like a character before.

Kinda this, yea. I don't try to like a character just because someone else likes them; I either like them or not. But if someone says something that changes my mind about said character, I'll run with it.

No. Because friends can have opposing opinions on things.

Not really?

The friend with whom I discuss fandom most frequently often has somewhat similar taste as me. The only instance of her liking a character I dislike is Eridan, and Homestuck is hardly a small enough canon and cast for that to matter - there are 20489 other things to talk about. (And analyzing him is still interesting even if I don't fangirl him)

Anyway, like another anon said...it's ok to like different things. and disliking or hating a character doesn't mean you have to be constantly bashing or overtly hating on them to friends who like them.

A friend of mine really likes Castiel & Destiel but I really can't stand him. I mostly just refrain from talking about Supernatural at all.

I suspect I AM that friend. I can get weirdly defensive about Captain America.

Why are your friends really hurt about fictional characters? Or--why are you going on about how much you don't like a character so much that you're annoying people?

No, but a friend and I have an unspoken agreement not to discuss Vossler from FFXII for this reason.
