I don't understand the Mello/Matt thing. For all we know, Near might've contacted Roger and asked for back-up for Mello's sake, and Matt was who he sent. You see Matt for all of ten panels and he and Mello barely interact. They have a working relationship with very little personality in it - the few casual remarks are all made by Matt and completely ignored by Mello. Sure, Mello shows regret at Matt's death, but that's because Mello's a good guy at his core. He doesn't want good people to die.
On the flipside, everything he does is motivated by Near. They're irrevocably connected. He hates him, he challenges him, he tells him he'll wait for him, he puts his life at risk (note that, in the manga's official translation, what motivates him to move is Halle telling him Near intends to have his own name written; they don't mention any one else) and ultimately dies for him - it evolves towards love. Even if you don't want to interpret their relationship as moving in that direction, you can't ignore the bond between them. If Mello really wanted Near dead, he could've just let him go after Light. Obviously, the ease with which Near was planning on beating Light bothered Mello. He could've let the plan go on. Best case scenario, Near dies, and Mello could swoop in and use the outcome of that encounter as irrefutable proof that Light Yagami is Kira. Instead, he chooses to risk his life to give Near a better shot at winning. If that's not love in some form, I don't know what is.
Two last notes - I love Near. He's my favorite character in the series, and it's not because he's "cute". There are plenty of other reasons to like him. Finally, you're exactly right that Death Note is not about who boinks who. A big chunk of it, however, is the interactions between the amazing personalities that make up the main cast. Exploring relationships is perfectly in tune with the series and not necessarily about sex or eye candy. Don't be so shallow.

It's not love. I don't think it's even a form of love. Mello risked his life, not for Near, but for the bigger picture-- to catch Kira, to avenge L's death.

furthermore, i don't see why this is a secret at all. practically the entire DN fanbase hates near, never mind mello/near, so... i think the SP is just trying to stir shit, to be honest. :/

I used to hate him once, but meanwhile he's just unimportant und uninteresting for meRe: 23.
however, i can state with absolute certainty that i have found the vast majority of people in the fandom do not like near, several even going so far as to say they "loathe" him (as do you yourself, in your user info). there is far more mello/matt art than there is mello/near (recently, at least), and far more fic which features matt, mello, or even matt/mello, than near in any shape, form or fashion.
you will note that in my original comment i used the word "practically"; i do not claim that the literal entire fanbase hates him, that would be both ridiculous and simply impossible, being that i know quite a few people who do not. however, the majority of my friends, and an even bigger majority of the fandom as a whole, either have no time for him or actively dislike him.
perhaps this is noninclusive of me, but when i say "the fanbase", i am referring to western fans, and not japanese ones (since those are the people whose posts i read and who i speak with on a daily basis, being that i speak english and not japanese). and, while i don't claim to know what's going on with the japanese fans (who produce the art i presume you're referring to), in the western segment of the fandom, near is hugely underrepresented in terms of fans.

The only DN characters I don't like are Misa, Takada and Light, but I'm not especially fond of L (not that I dislike him, I just never developed a particular affinity for him). But yes, in my experience of fandoms (which is about 11 years at this stage), I find that DN is one of the most hateful. People are so proud of their dislike of characters and so fucking vocal about it, it can really get you down.

... he did have half the chance, and Near lived. If you want to argue that Hal stopped him, you can, and I won't stop you, because that's a reasonable argument, but that still doesn't explain why he didn't just let Near die at the end of the series when he very well could've. Like you said, Near's death would've been very much to his advantage.
