Of course it hurts. Any long-cherished dream that you can't achieve hurts. Nothing odd about that at all. The secret lies in keeping your dream anyway, but getting on with making your own life. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at that bit myself, so I can't be terribly helpful there.
As for betrayals, western mythos is full of wishes you can't tell people because they won't come true. Birthday cake candles, shooting stars, things like that.
Look after yourself, anon, and keep dreaming anyway. =)
(Cats are allowed to be wizards too, right? Maybe you could look into helping out a feline wizard and giving one a home. =) )
