I think people who do this have good, active imaginations. Having an active imagination is not a bad thing on it's own, but as other say, so long as it does not stop you from living other aspects of life.

I have made up adventure - and later romance - stories about characters I have invented all my life. I do similar things with fandom characters as well, thinking up elaborate AU ideas. Such ideas, if you're inclined to write more than I am might make great fanfics.
