Yeah I know a lot of people have called Death of the Author on this, but I was thrilled to hear it when the writer said that. That's what I thought Ellie would do, myself.

Yep. After the ending. The head writer was asked what he saw happening afterwards in an interview, and he said Ellie leaves him because he lied to her.

The mechanics are unresponsive and terrible, and the story is overrated and overrated and overhyped to shit. My friend was watching me play and literally leaned over and asked "so, when's she going to get infected and die to drive the plot?" when Tess showed up. It's yet more ~but humans were the real monsters all along~ "grimdark" starring The World's Worst Human Being, Joel McGravellyAngst.

It's touted as being soooo realistic, but it makes you buy sonar points to hear enemies approaching you instead of putting in stereo footstep audio like every other shooter these days manages to do, turns a sniper into literally a disembodied gun so that you cannot countersnipe him because plot, has stealth so hokey and badly programmed that the enemy AI can't "see" you when you're crouched behind a pool table three feet away so short that Joel's head is completely over the top, there's no prone and no lean, and has ally AI so laughably atrocious that on my playthrough the black kid literally ran up and humped the fungus zombies.

And the "grimdark" so serrrrious story is completely undercut by the having Joel he-man his way through the same goddamned power fantasies as every other shooter ever, slaughtering so many waves of generic bad guys I might as well have been playing some bro-tastic FPS. Only less realistic because at least in those games you have a squad of other military hardasses and tons of military hardward. Joel vanquishes people he disagrees with by himself while his escort occasionally throws rocks and takes pot shots! Not to mention the tiered boss fight at the end straight out of a JRPG: crazy knife-wielding maniac now transforms into... One-Winged Angel crouching maniac!

And don't even get me started on the dumbshitassery that was the ending. No one would actually need to kill someone to biopsy their brain. And if for some magical fungus zombie magic reason they did, there would be no reason to keep her alive to "prep" her for surgery... aside from giving Joel the plot convenience to swoop in and be argh manry.

Naughty Dog promised us this was going to be a groundbreaking, story-focused narrative, not Yet More Post Apocalyptic Zombies With An Angry Man And His Dead Or Captured Females (slightly subverted for a few missions - girl power!).

It's like I somewhat agree with parts of what you said, but I enjoy the game anyway.

You're allowed your opinion. TLOU was extremely predictable in many ways, but I still think it's one of the best games I've every played. It wasn't anything groundbreaking in terms of the content of the story, but to me the execution was nigh perfect and that's what matters most to me. But then again I don't mind 'humans are the real monsters' stories; if well written, they can be quite effective.

I will never understand why people get pissed about spoilers in fandomsecrets when there's a warning RIGHT AT THE TOP that secrets might have spoilers. Also, the game has been out for over a year. ALSO, it doesn't even happen in the game.
