[Spartacus and Game of Thrones]

Crixus had even more reason to turn on Lucretia though, didn't he?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering Tyrion's mental state in the book and what had happened to him, I'd say he had more reason than Crixus did.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not doubt that Shae betrayed him and in the show, went after him with a knife. But Crixus was a slave and Lucretia coerced him into a sexual relationship that he had no option to refuse, all while Crixus was in love with and separated from someone else.

Considering Lucretia was Crixus's slave master and sexual abuser for years, what did Shae do that was worse?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
I said considering his mental state Tyrion had more reason.

Read what GRRM said about his motivations, he was clearly more unstable at the moment than Crixus was.

Oh, well, yeah, Tyrion was probably more unstable than Crixus in general. But I don't think that objectively gave him a better reason to seek revenge than Crixus had, which is how I was looking at your comment, sorry. Subjectively, though, yeah, he was in a worse place.

I love both shows and I'm not bothered by either of these. It's a TV show.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Shae was horrible. I don't condone stabbing people because they're horrible in RL (obviously...) but god damn am I glad she's dead. Why did they try to make it out like she and Tyrion had some epic romance on the show and then make her soooo stupid and annoying? At least in the books her agenda was clear.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume it's because Lucretia was a terrible person. I was upset by it anyway because holy shit, that was still pretty harsh. I personally liked Lucretia because I thought she was a great baddie (so it was more of a love to hate thing). Everyone in this show gets fucked over pretty badly.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The power differentials aren't really comparable. Lucretia owned Crixus, and as such she'd been essentially raping him (I can't remember any scenes where she asked for consent) for years. Not to mention her violence against Naevia. Shae was a prostitute who was in Tyrion's employ; the ball was pretty much entirely in his court. It's not the same.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
She was definitely raping him. He had no choice whatsoever in the matter.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyrion was currently a prisoner who was going to be executed, Shae was in bed with the most powerful man in Westeros. I'd say she had more power than he did in that scene.

Tyrion was still a nobleman and Shae a whore.

That doesn't go away regardless of who is sleeping with who.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all that power really helped when Tyrion came for her, that's why she's still alive and kicking in the lap of luxury right now...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that she had been a prostitute in his employ was irrelevant, though, he no longer had that power over her.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Lucretia ever explicitly asked for consent, but there was one time where he didn't want to have sex (because he was fighting the next day? I don't remember) and she didn't push.

NOT THAT THAT EXCUSES ANYTHING, BUT THAT'S THE ONLY CONVERSATION I CAN THINK OF WHERE REFUSING CAME UP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say.....

:)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I liked Show!Shae. I just don't get why they felt like creating a totally different dynamic and then pasting on the book's ending anyway. There were absolutely no hints that Show!Shae was working for Tywin all along; it felt like something major happened to change her mind but it was never shown. They way they wrote her, it only would've made sense if Tywin had caught her early on in King's Landing and had been manipulating her to mistrust Tyrion ever since, so when she blew up over Sansa it was the last straw (instead of the first). Or if she'd tricked Bron into thinking she was on the boat just so she could sneak back to protect Tyrion (even though she was mad at him), and then she got caught by Tywin's men and tortured into betraying him. Anything but what they did, damn.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he basically her sex slave? If someone stabbing another person because that person is enslaving them and forcing them to have sex isn't a good enough reason to commit murder then what the hell is?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
He had already escaped at that point. He did it out of revenge. He had her cornered and he killed her unborn child who, btw, had no say in the matter.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck off with that. Lucretia raped him for a very long time in order to GET a child off of him. She stole from him, and he had every reason not only to hate her but to NOT want a child with his rapist. It was violent and I know she wanted that child badly for her husband, but that doesn't mean I don't understand his reasons for doing what he did. I think by stabbing her in the womb, he was taking revenge, yes, for his girlfriend's beating and banishment, but to also end a situation (the pregnancy) he had no choice in. Maybe instead of seeing it as violence by a man against a woman who couldn't fight back, you could try seeing it as a rape victim acting against the rapist who took his choices and the one good thing he had in his life.

I'm just going to point out that Spartacus doesn't have anywhere NEAR the popularity that GoT has so I don't see how there would ever be as many people up in arms over that in the first place.

also I just finished rewatching Spartacus with a friend like an hour ago and I'm still not okay, I fucking love this show but it hurts

Didn't at least some of the upset with what show-Tyrion did come from him being the closest thing to a kinda-sorta-almost-decent hero as GoT ever gets and then doing this distinctly unheroic act out of revenge? Whereas Crixus was never portrayed a hero, he was a dick making the lives of those beneath him hell, and Lucretia was an even worse dick making his life hell, and that scene didn't contradict anything we already knew about who they were and what they were capable of.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much, yeah. Not sure why I'm supposed to be shocked and appalled by assholes acting in character.
