Fabrics shirts can be made of

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
For a fic, I need some fabric a shirt or other clothes can be made of that isn't silk... my friend has a bit of a clothes kink and I'm trying to write porn that she'll actually like (she doesn't like the sticky parts of porn), but English isn't my native language and even in my native language I don't know names for many fabrics.

Could anyone tell me any good fabrics for shirts (and other clothes too, maybe) and words to describe them with?

Cotton or linen?

Er, well... cotton, linen, cotton/linen blends, Egyptian cotton, man-made fibers like rayon, satin... not sure if that helps, though. It depends on what time period this is, what the setting is and how the character would dress.

Current day and the character is an actor, so any clothing at all can happen.

satin is more of a weave pattern and can be made out of different types of fibre, including silk.

Cotton - soft, thin, crisp, wrinkled, can get ripped

Knit - ribbed, stretchy, doesn't rip easily, doesn't fray when cut

Polyester - not stretchy, shiny, soft, thin

Linen - same as cotton, but slightly thicker

Chiffon - sheer, lightweight, frays, rips, air

Most shirts are going to be a cotton/polyester or polyester/linen blend. Mixing it with polyester makes it more durable, and less likely to rip. Chiffon can be made out of polyester or silk.

Thanks! That's a really helpful list.

Cotton, especially for casual shirts. Denim or more cotton for pants. Artificial fabrics come up occasionally (the most likely of those is polyester), but I'm fairly sure the only item of clothing I actually own that's mostly made of them is certain items of underwear and my formal dress. (Not sure why the dress is mostly polyester, but I'm not about to complain; it sheds water incredibly well.)

Before using one of these terms, look it up. I'm just listing things.

Reasonably common materials you could make a shirt from:
Cotton, ramie, rayon, linen--basically all plant-based. Hempcloth exists, but isn't very common as far as I know.
Wool, mohair, angora, cashmere--from animal hair.
Polyester is...a poor imitation of silk, I think, and probably not that sexy.
Some clothing meant to be stretchy (not shirts or blouses as a rule) may have Lycra (also called "spandex") in the weave. This is a common material for brassiere straps, leotards, and swimwear.

Weaves:
Satin, flannel, denim/jean, seersucker, twill, others I'm not thinking of right now....
Velveteen, fustian, velour, velvet, terry--heavier weaves with "pile."

Alternatively:
Knit (machine knits are so common as to be unremarkable in the present era, but "hand-knit" might be evocative).
Mesh.
Sheer.
Lace.

I've failed to think of a lot.
