Manga recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Preferably manga I can read online! I've been bored out of my mind lately and stupid manga will probably be a cure. My preferred genres are yaoi/BL and reverse harem but I'll take any recs. For example I started and finished what's available of Love Stage!! in a night. ;;;;

Normally I always have a million manga recs, but I'm not a huge yaoi/BL or harem/reverse harem fan.

The only ones I have are Ouran Host Club, which is so popular it's not even really a rec. (Also my OTP didn't become canon. Boooo...)

And Negima! which is harem, not reverse harem.

Maaaaaybe, Gokusen? It's about the daughter of a yakuza boss who goes to teacher at an all boys school. But only two are like love interest, harem worthy.

And maybe, Perfect Girl Evolution/Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge? There are a lot of pretty dudes in that one. Once again though, only one is really into the main character.

ETA: Also Yuu Watase is pretty classic, but does a lot of reverse harem stuff.

What was your Ouran otp?

Hikaru/Haruhi.

Like all the typical shoujo conventions pointed to Tamaki/Haruhi as being endgame, but up until that point, Ouran was a manga about poking fun at typical shoujo conventions, so I really thought it had a chance.

Plus I loved the idea of the twins essentially started as a Fred & George knock off, and then really developing into main characters of their own right and challenging the whole "identical twins stay identical in thoughts, feelings, etc" trope. I think it was perhaps the most original and genre defying route the mangaka could've gone.

Also, I just loved their chemistry more than Tamaki/Haruhi.

I now realize this is probably the main reason I never read harem/reverse harems. My OTPs never become the canon pairing in the end.

ayrt

Saaame. Tamaki/Haruhi as a requited romantic couple is really dull to me, and it felt really shoehorned in the anime (only recently started the manga, so Idk if it's handled better there).

Okay, yeah. I am a manga person 99% of time. I heard the anime made up its own ending... rather like the Fruits Basket anime.

Mini-tangent, but I've met people who are like "oh yeah i'm a huge fan of fruits basket; i watched anime and really loved it. shame they leave it open ended like that" and I'm like "OMG READ THE MANGA; THE MANGA HAS AN ENDING; AND EXTRA CHARACTERS; AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL" and they're like "nope, not a manga person, maybe later." >:(

*breathes deeply*

Anyways, yeah. Ouran goes on for an additional 10+ volumes of content past the anime. Hikaru and Kaoru get so much more character development and depth. At one point Hikaru dyes his hair black because he's tired of people seeing him as one half of a matching set and only there for comic relief. He realizes his feelings for Haruhi, he makes them known (when I read it I was internally screaming because on the one hand "yaaaaaaay HIKARU" on the other hand "noooooo confessing first is a mark of ship death").

Tamaki's development on the other hand = "i feel protective of her. but i'm not her father. so what am i?" and all the other characters going "dude". And Haruhi being equally clueless, and all the other characters going "dude."

And meanwhile Hikaru is putting his all forward and I'm just crying because whatever I ship is always destined for doom.

While I am near-certain it is not what you are going for, I need to put in a word for Pokemon Adventures. http://jb2448.info/ has scans up through very recently. It's been running since 1997, so there's a lot of it, and it's much better than you'd expect from a Pokemon spinoff.

Did you get into Love Stage!! because of the show? I finished it over the past few days (along with the Back Stage! ones too).

Try Tenki Yohou no Koibito (the weatherman is my lover), since it's a stupidly cute story about a dere weatherguy and a newscaster guy in love.

Also, maybe not technically reverse harem, but Wallflower is pretty sweet. iirc, three hot popular guys make it a mission to turn the gloomy-looking girl who looks like a horror ghost into a hot cool kid.

It's not that yaoi, more shounen-ai, but have you read Hana nomizo Shiru? Lovely little story. So is Mahoutsukai no Koi. And Shinkuu Yuusetsu.

If you want more comedy in your BL, Henshin Dekinai is funny. Usagi Otoko Tora Otoko is, too. Sugar Code is adorable.

I actually read a lot of BL, but lately I've been listening to a lot of BL drama CDs again, so I can only remember mangas that have drama CDs.

Oh! Have you read Sex Pistols? That started pretty cracky. And we have canon mpreg and femmeslashpreg there.
