Marvel fans, what do you think of female Thor and Sam Wilson as Captain America?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
And is it something you'd like to see incorporated into the cinematic universe at some point in the not too distant future?

I'm not familiar with the exact details of Sam taking up Cap's mantle but I'm fine with it and it's not the first time someone else has been Captain America. Plus, I like the close bond Sam and Cap have had over the years and I feel like it makes sense for him to be one of the front runners for taking over Captain America.

I'm a little bit more iffy on the Thor thing though. I don't have any problem with a woman becoming Thor. That part's fine and I hope they develop her into an interesting character. I just dislike the fact that they had to make Thor become unworthy of wielding Mjolnir to do. It just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and I don't like the direction they're taking Thor (the dude).

They're...making Thor unworthy???

Welp. I thought lady!Thor would be interested but not at the expense of dude!Thor so I'm out.

Yes, all of the sources I've seen indicate that Mjölnir rejects Thor. I'm not sure how they'll play it out, but I'm highly wary.

Here's one that includes an official marvel picture of Thor after it happens: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=54067

...you know what, I misread the original post and thought it was happening in the movies. Haha. So I don't care what they do in this particular line of comics, I just won't read it.

(Making Thor permanently unworthy, get outta here)

They should do it with everyone talking to male Thor in one panel, then the next panel is female Thor and no one (except the reader - and Deadpool) notices a change. Go total cosmic retcon on it. Thor Odinsdottir is how Thor is and always now was. No explanation, no leftover Male!Thor anywhere, no grandquest to reset continuity ending with No More Vikings or anything like that at all. Just a quick switcherover and the resident fourth wall breaker being the only one to joke about things having changed.

I don't like Sam taking up the mantle precisely because of his bond and relationship with Steve. They've always been equal partners. Sam taking over the mantle feels like he's be treated more as a sidekick or junior partner being promoted.

This wouldn't be the first time Thor has been deemed unworthy, I don't think, so I'm curious what they're doing this time and if it's actually bringing anything new to the table.

I'm waiting to see how they handle Girl!Thor, I can see ways where it would stink, I can see ways where it would be bland, but I cannot see a way in which it would work out cool. Of course that just speaks to the limits of my imagination.

Black Captain America, be cool if that is the direction the movies go in after Chris's contract runs out in 2017 but until that happens. Meh, been done.

Neither of them are bad things, and I hope when the inevitable reset button gets pressed they use their adventures as Main Characters to get their own books. Temporarily taking over a main character's identity is probably one of the few ways of getting a new character off the ground successfully these days. I wonder who is taking over Wolverine's identity while he is temporarily dead?

I'm more concerned about their move to make Tony Stark even more of a fascist dick in the upcoming Iron Man reboot. At this point even Red Skull has got to be side-eyeing Tony and going "Hey, want to tone it down man".

I think it's theoretically awesome? It depends how it gets handled as to whether I want it in the MCU or not. If there had ever been a time to have Sam Wilson as Captain America, though, it would have made sense to have it happen at the end of Winter Soldier. I'm not sure how they'll swing the switch otherwise without making it clunky.

I'll hold judgement on the female Thor until we've met her character. I do like the idea in theory, though I don't see why they have to make someone new instead of bringing an existing but underutilized female character in to fill the role. It's also weird to me that she's gonna be Thor when Thor is the guy's name, not his moniker.

Sam Wilson as Cap... I love Sam, but it should have been Eli Bradley.

The MCU doesn't interest me, on the whole, so I don't care if these elements are incorporated or not.

Has Eli been in any of the comics lately? I thought I heard a vague mention of him appearing somewhere, but every time I try to search I find nothing. (Which is disappointing, because when he wasn't included in the newest Young Avengers series there was an impression that he would maybe be used elsewhere.)

I haven't heard anything official about him since it was explained he wasn't in Young Avengers because they wanted him for something else. As far as I know, that something else is still in limbo. Having a black Cap would have been the perfect time to bring him back.

*sigh* Figured as much, but thought I'd make sure. It would've been a nice fit for sure, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I'm curious to see what they're going to do with it. I'm slightly wary about female Thor but only because I'm worried about what's going to happen to her when Thor becomes worthy of wielding the hammer again(because we all know he will), will she just get shuffled off to the side like she never existed in the first place? Also Thor isn't a mantle or title like the other superhero identities are, it's his actual name and idk how I feel about him being made unworthy. But shall have to see where it goes.

Sam as cap though I've got no issue with, I just hope Steve hasn't died again to cause this, his title has been used by other people before so I'm interested to see what to do with it. Also Sam is totally a good choice for cap.

Not sure if I'd want it in the MCU? It depends on where they go with the MCU Canon tbh.

Apparently, Steve rapidly aged 65 years due to the loss of the super soldier serum. https://movies.yahoo.com/news/marvel-reveals-captain-america-colbert-report-074000245.html

I haven't been following to closely but I'm kinda hoping that it's not so much a female Thor as a female Don Blake*?

Like, the only way it could make it make sense to me is if they decide to re-do Thor's origin story- where he is demonstrated as unworthy, and is put in a human body until he once again deserves the hammer - but they decide poor Don's been through enough so they create another human to host the spirit and powers of Thor. And she's a chick.

(being in a lady's body for awhile seems to have done wonders for Loki's worthiness, after all....)

P. sure that's not what they're doing though, unless the press has been a deliberate fakeout.

I really want to like the idea of female Thor and I really did at first... but I just can't reconcile the fact that the writers are stating that she is THE Thor, not She-Thor or whatever else, with the fact that the original, male Thor is apparently still going to be around, just now deemed unworthy. It seems like they're half-assing it and giving themselves an easy escape or something. If they want to make Thor a woman, they should just do it and commit to the idea without leaving dude Thor around as a safety net.

Curious, what did you think was going to happen to him?

Honestly, I don't really know, I never thought that far before I saw that the original Thor would be around still. I guess I just assumed there would be no distinction between the original male Thor and the new female Thor -- Thor would just be a woman now.

I just don't get why they didn't just choose one of the norse goddesses and use her as stand-in Thor. Because, like the others said, Thor isn't a title, it's his name. So unless it's a sudden sex swap (which it's not, apparently), there is absolutely no reason for her to be called "Thor" as well - other than making it even more difficult to talk about a hero by name (Because every single hero name seems to have at least on other person taking up the same name).

And ... yeah, like Lady!Loki, I hope the "female Thor" thing never even comes close to the MCU.
