Eeehh... no. If the Japanese had been in some far-off corner of the world that wasn't involved in WWII, then sure, I'd let it pass. But when you consider that they were the allies of the Nazis and participated in equally abominable actions that they still aren't apologizing for... yeah. They need to stay the fuck away from armbands as well.

Japan isn't a village or behind a China-esque internet firewall. I don't think the Japanese people get a pass for Nazi-glorifying because the Diet doesn't add enough information to their textbooks.

But that only makes it worse. They shouldn't get special treatment for glorifying Nazis if the excuse is "Well, their country kinda is partial to Nazis."

Other countries don't have to all "see stuff just like we do" for everything but they should definitely see Nazis as bad, and if they glorify Nazis, they should be called out on it.

If I dressed up as a Japanese imperial soldier, and said that people should cut me some slack because, as an American, I can't be expected to understand the full extent of the Japanese actions in Asia during WWII, would you agree? If people called me out on it, would you say that there is an implicit "Chinese-ness" involved in being upset about Nanking, and a special "Korean-ness" about understanding why people get upset about the Comfort Women? That demanding these actions be universally deplored was an "absolutist view?"

No. You'd say I was a culturally ignorant asshole and that it was on me to understand why it wasn't ok to make light of these atrocities and the movement that caused them. Or at least, I hope you would. Same standards apply to the Japanese.

I don't think she's trying to say that it's okay for them to wear it. I think she's trying to say that they view the uniform in a different cultural context and are more likely to be ignorant of what it stands for (Japanese education glosses over the involvement of Japan and its allies in WWII), so it makes more sense for a Japanese cosplayer to unthinkingly wear a Nazi uniform. A Westerner, on the other hand, doesn't have either of those excuses.
