Okay, that's interesting, thank you for expanding.

FWIW - while I agree that it's not ultimately 'better' or 'worse', but different, I'm not at all comfortable giving the Japanese a pass for their relative ignorance of it, because I think that ignorance is itself to some extent faulty and wrong. Especially when you take into account the context (as you point out) of Japan having been allied to an Axis country and having its own issues with nationalism and war guilt.

Well, I think it's circular, to some extent. I think a lot of the Diet's support and individual politicians' support for the nationalism and whitewashing is a result of significant segments of the population supporting those positions. I don't think they come to it from nothing, I think they're representing their constituents, or at least some of their constituents.

Again, it's circular. It comes out of the culture, it gets taught in schools and promulgated in media, it gets passed on to the new generation, and then promulgated further. Still, I'm not sure how far I go in giving people a pass on wrong opinions because they're dominant in a subset of society. I think that's ultimately kind of weak sauce. Once you start going down that road, you know?
