It has a mythical rep because everyone was pissed at FOX at the time already for premature canxeling shows and they chose Whedon's show to turn into there lost classik. It is a Pretty Generic space Show, but nothing spescial.

It probably has something to do with Whedon being a nerd cult hero at the time as well. People were psyched about it before it even came out IIRC.

And I think it did have positive qualities and a lot of potential. Yes, Whedon would probably have ruined that potential as it went on, and I don't like the series as it actually exists personally, but it's not hard to understand why people like it.
