Because it was done in a silly manner. You can get away with some awful stuff if you do it silly. (See: Monty Python's "It's only a scratch." scene from The Holy Grail.)

I dunno, I thought it was a direct reference to some of the more horrific scenes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Which is to say, horror in a "family" film played for horror. Over the top enough to not make an audience go crazy in fear, but truly relateable peril in the context of the film. I don't want somebody rubbing the faces off my lego dudes, especially if they're sentient characters!
