In XMFC, she shapeshifted into an adult when she was a child. In the new X-Men movie, she used her shapeshifting abilities to look like someone about half her height. I don't think the size of the person she's imitating is actually that important, or has anything to do with her size.

I remember reading an article ages ago in some now dead Sci-Fi magazine talking about how shapeshifters never take pesky little things like physics into consideration and how the amount of energy for an average human sized creature to turn into even a "slightly more muscular" creature was enormous. I just remember laughing at the line, "Remember, don't shoot shapeshifters. They explode."

I always just assumed she could change her size however, but her weight would stay the same. Child-Mystique assuming the appearance of an adult would still have a child's weight, but would be much less dense because it's spread out.

Superhero physics are fun.
