Set in an alternate victorian era london that has been... relocated a mile underground. There are a lot of mysteries to solve and not everything is to do with battles. Kingdom of Loathing is great. It's a stick-figure RPG with all sorts of cool features and hilarious quests and storylines. I haven't played in years, but I always had a blast when I did. Hmm, I wonder if I have my old password written down somewhere...

You want Flea Circus and Nobby's Nuss. They're similar to old school Mario although not as complex, and there are some puzzle solving parts to them. They're my favorite online games (and, on that subject, the site they're on is pretty good for free games in general.) :)
