I'd never read a page of HxH or watched a single ep, but since I'm paying for the new chapters in my Jump subscription, I've been reading it.

I'm so confused. So many characters, so much weird politics. I think the main character showed up twice, and apparently he's (Spoiler warning!) not even going on the big fake(?) adventure.

From what OP said, I'd probably enjoy the beginning of HxH, with a simple quest to find the MC's father. Perhaps this current arc will resolve into something more straight-forward. Right now, I have the impression that the mangaka is juggling 100 different things, and I wish he'd resumed the series in a more quiet aspect.

The author has been focusing on world building since the two previous arc and this is more of that, with some extra political mess (part of it comes from the previous arc) and the continuation of the storyline of another of the main characters.

The main character can't go in the quest because he has loss his powers. He almost died because of his own choices, so it's actually good (as a long time shounen fan) to see him still paying a price for what he did.

Whether this will evolve into something more straight-forward or not, I'm not sure, but my interest waned at the begging of an arc before (the Chimera Ants one) but later, seeing it complete, I ended loving it including its the new characters.
So I, for one, I'm willing to expect something good even if it's a little confusing even for someone reading this manga since the start.

Focusing on world building explains quite a bit. I'd read the official HxH catchup written by the English licensor to help noob fans like me, but eventually it all blended together. :P There's no replacement for actually reading the previous ~350 chapters.

I'd forgotten the MC had lost his powers. I think it was mentioned once since the manga's return? It would be refreshing if his powers remained lost. Perhaps with all these other characters for the mangaka to use, it will happen. Or at least any power regaining will take longer than it did for Ichigo in Bleach.

I'm going to stick it out and continue to read HxH. I loved YYH enough to slog through the whole thing in Japanese before it was licensed, and again in English after. I trust the mangaka knows what he's doing. And I do like his character designs. HxH is holding my (admittedly confused) interest, which is more than can be said for the various YGO iterations I've also been paying for with my subscription.

Thanks for the extra info!! C:
