Re: Big Hero 6 White Washing Accusations
(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)Historically, there are hispanics of european, african, and native american (south/central america and Caribbean) descent. some have all, some have one or two, either way phenotype does not always reveal genotype.
In short, one may be a white hispanic, but you do not know what their genetic makeup is like.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)This I know, I'm Puerto Rican myself with an Irish last name (but that side of my family is black/habao).
There has been plenty of mixing on the islands (and mainlands) (my cuban friend is chinese somewhere down the line, tipo great grandfather). Heck, I've got some Arab blood in me too! But that's my point, there is so much mixing, it's ignorant to say that a person is just white. A person has no idea what's running through their DNA.
Bot to sound like a creep (bc I am on anon) but what part of PR are you from?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)Nice! My mom always tells me about how good the chinese food in PR was...
Born in Ponce, most of my family (both sides) is from there, but I grew up in NY, as most of my family (both sides) moved up to NY. Pops is a Nuyorican, my mom was straight from the island. And like you, and most PRicans, my extended family is located all over the east coast, with an abnormally high amount in NY and FL.

Re: Big Hero 6 White Washing Accusations
While I know this doesn't bear out everywhere, in my experience the language you speak and culture you identify with plays a lot into what nationality or ethnicity you define yourself as. I'm a first-generation American child of parents who immigrated here in their adulthood, but I feel American, not Indian-American. I value my ethnic ancestry, but I don't identify with it at all. Hell, I identify more with the Hispanic and Latino cultures I was raised around than the Indian culture I come from but had little connection to growing up.
So while many Hispanics are white in appearance, that doesn't actually mean that by default they are white as a culture, or get white privilege. (And ironically enough, a lot of the white-Hispanic girls I know are always trying to get a tan and turn their skin darker).
