According to my published author friends, nightmares in original fic are not considered good form. Weirdly, I just never wrote any in my original fic, but my fanfic is rife with them.

Huh... I never heard of that. Care to elaborate?

I am the same. In fanfic I write elaborate nightmares that often times are the bits that I have the most fun in writing, and serve a purpose that further's the plot. In original fic, I just don't come up with them in the first place. I can't seem to think of a place they'd fit.

When I suggested adding nightmares to the stories I was beta-reading, I was told 'it's not done'.

I love writing nightmares!

I will have to investigate. Though probably not at 2am.
(And I have an example of original, mostly written, fiction where nightmares are important. Fallen London).

Yay!

Enjoy your investigations.

Don't know Fallen London, except that it exists? But I'm sure there are always exceptions.

Indeed!

Thank you. (and good night)

One of the few truths in writing.

Honestly a lot of writing communities do that in my experience. They'll find a thing that CAN be done badly or is done badly by alot of beginners and then declare it bad writing. IMO it depends on how you do it. I think it's stupid to say you "just can't" write about something because someone thinks it can't be done well.

Hell I have a story that involves the protagonists being dreamhoppers (essentially) which means I'll have to be writing a TON of nightmares. I think people might have a thing about nightmares because some people don't know how to do nightmares well so it CAN turn out badly.

From what I was told, that came down from the publisher(s).

Ehhh.

Well still, it sounds like crappy lazy advice. A good critic IMO explains why you shouldn't do something or how to do it well. I've seen plenty of published books that utilized nightmares.
