Hey, I'm not trying to say there aren't a lot of assholes, for the record. I got bullied as a kid. I'm saying that once you reach adulthood--hell, even teenhood--it becomes a lot easier to avoid them. I have trouble feeling oppressed when nobody's been an jerk to me over my weight in years, I can buy clothing in a lot of stores or online, and people are nice to me. Yeah, a lot of guys won't date me. A lot of guys totally will! I give presentations at major conferences! Everyone is professional!

It really fucking angers me when people compare being fat to suffering from racism, sexism, or homophobia. People need to get a fucking grip. I've for a long time thought that the nutty end of fat acceptance is just a way for middle class white people to claim oppression, and I've seen nothing to dissuade me.

A lot of the pro-fat movement tended to rub the wrong way, mostly because it seemed to take "accept all body types" and turn it into "no one should be skinny" and "everything we know about proven correlations between obesity and heart disease is a lie". But I also think that's usually just overcompensating for a skinny-obsessed culture. But when people equate fat-shaming with racism or sexism...it's why I stay away from the movement entirely, even if I think some parts of it have a point and normally that would be enough for me to get involved.

I won't deny that fat-shaming is often tied up with sexism and racism, but they are not nearly the same thing, nor even all that parallel. People get assaulted and killed for "walking while black" or "walking while woman". I can't remember the last time I heard about someone being assaulted or killed just because they were fat.

THANK YOU. Being fat is not and will never be equal to any of those things, because it's something you can change if you really want to. That alone puts it on an entirely different level. You can't change your race, sex, or sexuality.
