Because some people find the word "woman" condescending (as if I'm saying something like "Get over here, woman!", which.. I'm not). I've been yelled at for using "ladies", and yelled at for using "women". And heaven forbid I say "girl", even though that's how I privately refer to myself.

I've learned there is just no right word for everyone. *sigh*
