Wait, I thought fluff was just stories that are happy, don't necessarily have any substantial plot*, and no angst or anything close to it at all but I never figured length would go into the equation, but characterisation should always (with the exception of Crack**) be in the equation...

At least that is what my experience is.

*Tho it could have, I just automatically think the most exciting thing plot wise in fluff stores would be planning to go to the store to buy lube milk or something along those lines.

**Even then I feel it should play some role, but a different more caricaturish one than in a more serious story

Yeah, I've been in fandom for over 10 years and I've only seen fluff used as a synonym for happyfic, whether there's plot or not. I've seen some longish self-described fluff, going back over a decade.

I think it might depend on the corner of the fandom you're in?

my experience too! I once read a 15k canon compliant fic about my OTP settling down and adopting a dog from an animal shelter. If that's not fluff I don't know what is.

This was how I always understood it too. I've always seen 'fluff' used to apply to fic where the overall atmosphere of the fic is cute and happy and sweet. It doesn't mean that it doesn't also have a plot or that it isn't long.
