Or some people legitimately think it's a good show with solid character development? It's been a few months, and I still love it just as much, which pretty much solidifies that it's not a flash in the pan for me personally because my attention span is quite short. Actually the more tokusatsu I watch, the more I appreciate Samflam and think it's great.

That's the thing, I don't think SF even knew if it wanted to be a Sentai show. I'll admit I only watched half of it, or at least I think, I made it to the part with the tortured girls and figured it wasn't going to be able to top its batshit self after that.

I still can't help but think it was a little overrated, not in the sense that it was over-hyped, but literally people thought it was much better than it was. I saw people laugh about the severe mood whiplash and asinine plot developments as if they were quirky features instead of signs of aimless writing and total lack of direction. The show has a slice of life, grounded feel for the first couple episodes as we follow dumb blonde and his uptight cop friend having crazy misunderstandings then fast forward and suddenly lesbians are getting fingers crushed with pliers by Saturday morning cartoons and what the fuck? In what universe is that necessary?

On the characters, it's hard to say. I don't recall being impressed by any of them. Cop was one-note but a good foil to Model. I think Masayoshi is the most unique creation of the show, but he frankly comes off as unhinged at times and I doubt the show would've gone anywhere with that.

Except it totally was a sentai homage, and it totally wanted to be a sentai homage. People acted like it was a huge twist out of nowhere, but the marketing actually showcased the sentai elements. We just missed that.

This becomes blatant... right after you stopped watching it? I mean, if you haven't seen the entire series it's a bit difficult to debate about this. The sentai plotlines were planned from the beginning, and their presence is even explained later on in a pretty clear (if very anime) manner.

Masayoshi is not unhinged, but he IS very emotionally immature and the show actually does explore that.

Just because it wanted to be an homage doesn't mean it's homage elements were well-written or even justified. The really sentai elements weren't entertaining, they were silly and it felt like the show was spinning it's wheels trying to think of something better. I don't think it was a twist, obviously the elements were there from the beginning, and the development of other Flamenco-inspired people in suits popping up seemed obvious, but the sentai part of the show was poorly done. If you're going to be an homage you need to be fresh and entertaining in your own right or what's the point? If I wanted crappy Power Rangers I'd just rather watch Power Rangers. I watched the part with the Flamenco Rangers or whatever and I thought that might be a good direction, but then the show kept on with it's Mad Libs writing and lost me again.

Just because a show explains something doesn't make it justified necessarily. Shows can explain many silly developments but that doesn't mean they were appropriate or match the tone of the show. I know I missed the later half, but I just can't imagine what could justify such goofy antics being halted for brutal torture scenes. It's just bad writing.

I saw many a gif set celebrating the couple at the end, and I thought it was actually a good development writing-wise. I complained about lack of direction and while the show still has that, a unconventional romance being the end result did give the show a sense of purpose, it made it all mean something more. But then the writers revealed they didn't even want that and... lol. Well played, Samurai Flamenco.

You haven't even watched the sentai part and you're saying it's poorly done? Like it's cool if you don't like it, and I'm not going to begrudge you that but... come on.
