Genological Confession/Secrets

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So I saw this while looking through the archives of F!S today, and thought we could try this since it's been about 6 months: What are some secrets/confessions you have about things your family has done in the past? Were some of them pirates? Guerillas? Assassins? Questionable military activities? King of France? Anything interesting really.

Daily reminder only first daughter/son lineage really counts past grandparents otherwise things start getting silly.

My grandpa tried to kill Jack Ruby because he thought my grandma was cheating with him. This was before Kennedy's assassination.

Let's see:

My paternal grandparents were first cousins

My mother and aunt knew two of the members of Aerosmith when they were kids

My sister's ex boyfriend was a limo driver and drove a certain band I won't name to their hotel in the 90's. One of the members left his bag in the car and the dick photocopied stuff he shouldn't have, like a license, picture of a female singer at the time in a t-shirt, etc. He got a chance to meet the band for 'returning' the bag, too. Ugh.

My father drove a cab in Milwaukee in the early 80's. Swears Jeffrey Dahmer was one of his fares and that he wanted him to come up to his apartment for 'payment', because he had left his wallet at home. He refused to go and demanded he just run in and come back down. Not sure if that's true, but he was in his late 20's at the time. Who knows!

Some of them were in North Carolina, and I don't know how long they were there, so... I really don't want to know. :/

My not-actually-blood-uncle has the kind of military history that usually gets people accused of making the whole thing up for attention (except he doesn't talk about it like ever and was homeless for quite a while after Vietnam because he couldn't deal). Among other things, he was a sniper, caddied golf in the Korean DMZ, and had a hell of a time getting treated for his Agent Orange exposure because the army wouldn't admit that he'd actually been in a place where it had been used.

The only interesting thing the rest of the family's done was get arrested for insider trading.

The records are missing too much for us to confirm it 100%, but I may have had family on the Mayflower.

My Dad grew up next door to Cary Grant.

My boyfriend is a direct descendant of the real life figure whose life story inspired ACD to write Hound of the Baskervilles.

Neat. I can't remember the man's name, but wasn't it a friend of ACD who told him stories about the Black Shuck legend from... Devon? Dorset? The details escape me.

Apparently some distant cousin a few times removed is a queen in India, and I have family that live in the summer home of a local king that they bought off said king generations ago. Granted, India has like a thousand small, local royalties that "rule" over estates smaller than the average high school in my city, so it doesn't mean all that much, but it's still a funny story.

I guess the other thing hasn't been strictly confirmed, but my mother's side of the family is suspiciously light-skinned given our actual location/genetic origin. Factor in the amount of interaction our family had with British elite during the colonial era and it becomes really fucking suspicious. :P Of course, if you actually ask anyone in the family, it's clearly just a genetic quirk.

There's a family legend that my great grandmother was actually kind of horrible to my great grandfather, would randomly kick him out and everything. :/ It's sad, though I like to think there was more to the story.

One of my great-great-grandfathers hopped a train from Louisiana to California at midnight and told nobody he was leaving. We don't know why.

Another ancestor came from Germany to America with his father and the nanny, who he had been instructed to call his mother. They were also apparently some sort of nobility, judging from the last name (von Tautenberg); probably very distant, but still.

And my grandfather was the police photographer for the OJ Simpson case.

My paternal grandfather was an American POW in the Bataan Death March and escaped.

My father's family comes from one of the older/more historical cities in my area. Some time ago, a geneological survey was done and it was discovered that the area had housed more than its share of pirates. No surprise. It's an island that had heavily disputed ownership for ~300 years. What my father found interesting was looking back and remembering just how many of his old school friends were "criminals" (in his words). My father and his 2 brothers were delinquents, but they were also young boys in the 1940s and 50s. There was a great deal of roughhousing and a great deal of bloodshed between them. My grandfather, an abusive adulterer, threatened the family (his wife and children) at gunpoint before killing himself.

tl;dr I'm probably descended from pirates, yarr
