I think that was just an attempt to make a Final Fantasy game actually difficult sadly. Akin to Resident Evil's limited resources or somesuch.

Pfft, if I wanted a difficult Final Fantasy I'd pick up FFVIII again, since it breaks the "TOO HARD? WELL LEVEL-GRINDING WILL MAKE IT BETTER :D" mould and you actually have to, y'know, strategize.

Honestly, considering who was most likely to buy the game -- people who had played FFVII or other FFs -- you'd think they'd have been smart and made the system something that would've been more suited to RPG players rather than trying to target the sort of audience who plays Devil May Cry and the like.

(Then again, this IS Squeenix we're talking about...)
