Well, when it hits the big time, I sure hope Crisis Core doesn't divide everything up into another "us vs them" situation like we now have with old school FF vs AC.

I'm usually a pretty laid back person, but all these little schisms drive me bonkers.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-04 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
The thing with AC is any lazy schmuck can make their way through it just by sitting on their ass for about an hour and a half, whereas the games you actually have to PLAY through in order to really get them; Crisis Core may only take about 20 hours without the missions, but still, that involves much more effort than a movie does. Honestly, I somehow doubt the fandom will encounter that problem again unless they put out another movie.

[identity profile] dreamcatcher.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
But AC was so... mild. All it had was three new characters and a slightly funnier characterization of Reno. And it still sent fandom into WWIII and fractioned it into a ton of comms.

It makes it hard for me to figure out where to post things and I get cranky.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-04 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
See, I really think the "mild" bit was part of the problem. The characters within it are rendered down to pale shadows of themselves, like tea made from used teabags. Granted, an hour and a half ain't gonna give us much room to expand on such things, but even a HINT would've been nice. We get that Reno's a funny guy, sure, but the brusque professional who dropped the Plate on Sector 7? No sign of him. We get that Cloud has issues, yeah, but the movie don't even hint at HALF of the identity conflict and self-worth issues and manipulation thing he had to struggle with.

Even this might not've been such an issue, though, and the fandom could've enjoyed (or ignored, as they prefer) the movie as a silly little fluff piece alongside the game, not meant to stand alone. But with the appearance of people in the fandom who'd only watched the movie, assumed that the characterisation there was sufficient (or, worse still, were only interested in a character because "s/he's hot"), and started spouting stuff like fic or whatever without bothering to hunt down the game and take the time to play it for a better understanding of things? Frankly, I can't blame the fandom for being upset about it.

[identity profile] dreamcatcher.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess I can understand the frustration, but I'm not enamored of the chosen solution: the endless splitting and division and shunting off to the side of some fascinating canon. It's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, ya know?

I'll freely admit, this is all my own selfish reaction. (I'm no saint.)

When I want to write about the FFVII world, it encompasses everything that happened in that world. OGC, AC and CC... they're all just more toys to play with. Yet, the world I want to play in is scattered across all sorts of comms and, plain and simple, it's a pain in the tuckus.

Honestly, I don't know how FF keeps any kind of coherent fanbase for their fics when things are spread so far and wide, and that makes me a sad ficcer. (I'm all about having a solid fanbase because it helps us to become more close-knit, to know the good authors to rec, to pimp the fandom to those not already in it, to keep people interested in reading about FFVII... in short, to keep people coming back. Problem is, there's no "back" to come to because the LJ splintering is confusing as all get out.)

Maybe now that the AC "fad" has died down, and with the hope that CC is not immediately jumped upon by the old-timers, things can come back more towards one world.

But I'm afraid once something's been divided into 6 comms, it's impossible to piece them back together.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I'm a bit of a pick-and-choose ficcer, myself; I rarely ignore a Compilation piece completely, because most of them do introduce a whole bunch of fascinating new ideas, but I've yet to write anything that's fully compliant with all the new canon they've put out. (Curse you, BC, for being so unattainable, and curse me for not being content with scripts.)

For the FFVII community as a whole, I don't think its dissolution and scattering can be blamed entirely on the Compilation, though that certainly did help start things. The vast majority of the authors I follow have shifted completely away from LJ to IJ following the Strikethrough and all that nonsense, and while it's nice that there's still that little group of them all in one place, there really is no centralized community, which is kinda sad. I mean, at least here on LJ we have [livejournal.com profile] ff_press to keep things somewhat linked, but there's nothing like it over there. And the fact that we're split across sites now just makes it even worse.

But anyway, as far as CC goes, it's definitely been my favourite piece of the Compilation thus far. Almost everyone I know of who's played it has given it positive reviews overall. It'd be wonderful if this were the game that could bring the fandom back together, but unfortunately there will always be those old-timer fans who despise the Compilation on principle (probably precisely because of the AC thing), so I'm afraid I can't be too optimistic there. :(

It's almost enough to make one yearn for that time when the most divisive issue in the fandom was the Cloud/Aeris vs. Cloud/Tifa shipwar. (Not that I suppose I can really talk about that, being a relative fandom newcomer myself, but still.)

[identity profile] dreamcatcher.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, [livejournal.com profile] ff_press was my one piece of sanity in all this. I admire all the work they put into the newsletter. I also saw something on there about trying to round up authors on different boards / websites (I think?). I've been MIA for a bit so I'm just getting up to speed. I'll have to check into that more.

And that's great to hear the game's getting good reveiws.

I'll have to check out the CC comm. It would be awesome-cakes if 1) the game was a hit and 2) the comm allowed FFVII, BC, AC, and DoC fic. Then maybe everyone could gather together in one playground at least.

Unfortunately, I don't like spoilers, so I may have to wait until March(?) to friend it. In the meatime, with all the LJ craziness going on, maybe I'll just head over to InsaneJournal and scout things out for a bit. It was fun chatting with ya! *wave*

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
No worries.

As an old-timer, it makes me yearn for precisely that on a frequent basis.

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an old-timer, and while I agree that some aspects of CC sucked, it was overall a fantastic game and I'm really glad my roommate and I imported it. :D It actually managed to bring me back into the fandom after I'd completely left it, and I'm starting to fic again. So, even with new characters and stupid wings, and Gackt... ILU Crisis Core. ♥

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, CC is going to be radically divisive. Not only does it feature quite a lot of things that are already pissing off the hardlining OG fans (how many one-winged SOLDIERs?), it changed the Nibelheim incident. Which, more significantly than how much it's going to piss off the crazy OG fans, means it will really be divisive, because the fans that come in through CC will believe it to be the version espoused by the OG.

It's only not a shitsplosion already simply because so few people have read the translations or played it.

[identity profile] dreamcatcher.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh joy. See, I must not be that picky because I'll read anything from old school to CC (once I've gotten the game in my grubby little hands and played it, that is. I'm still in spoiler-free land right now). If the fic states it's OGC canon, I'll happily follow along. If it states CC canon, I'll go there too, as long as it's written well and keeps me entertained. Because (for the most part) it's the exact. same. characters, heh.

But I guess it all works out in the end, as long as we have [livejournal.com profile] ff_press to keep herding all us finicky cats back into one spot.
