It's funny. My school's theater department did Equus this year. Which is good, because I wanted to see the play, but seeing Harry Potter naked would have made me feel kind of awkward.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on like you'd have passed up the chance to see Harry's wand in person.

...I'm pretty close with most of the theater department at my college, so I'm glad WE haven't done a play like Equus, TBH. It'd be sort of bizarre seeing some of my friends naked like that. I'd be all "hey I've seen your junk dude."

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, but all I can think of when I read the books or watch the movies is how tiny and cute and girly his voice was he was when he was 11. Neville's wand, on the other hand -

I'm a techie, so there's a possibility that if they needed someone for costume run crew in a pinch, I'd end up seeing peoples' junk even if we didn't do a play with nudity. I definitely saw lots of underwear backstage when I was a spot op for Gypsy, so nakedparts don't concern me too terribly much anymore. XD

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how there'd be an added gray area, yeah. XD

And it doesn't terribly concern me, either. I mean, I play water polo, and even if there wasn't shower locker room nudity.... we're all wearing Speedos the entire time. But for some reason it seems a bit different in my mind than the prospect of being in an audience and watching a good friend cavort naked on stage.

Huh.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the audience adds to the intimidation factor, I'm sure. I dunno, I always find the nudity taboo a little weird as a conceptual thing. My last two roommates and I would change in front of each other with no problem, but this year's model dislikes exposed girlparts, so now I find myself feeling oddly self-concious about changing clothes, just in case she happens to walk into the backroom while I'm putting a shirt on. I feel much more at ease when there isn't an active taboo on it.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're very right, and it's sort of interesting when you think about it. Like I said, I'm totally fine when it comes to my waterpolo team and changing or speedos, but it was kind of awkward changing in my room with my roommate anywhere around back in freshman year XD

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. It's much less awkward, I think, to go "Well, we have the same parts, whatever," than having to be sneaky about exposure, but my roommate is a little uncomfortable about her body image, so I think I can understand.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I mean yeah, you'd think that. O.o And it should be true. I mean whether it's my teammate or my roommates, we've all got the same damn dangly bits presumably.

It's just interesting how different contexts feel more or less taboo when they really shouldn't.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's the act of making it taboo, I think. As soon as something's defined some way, it starts to feel that way.

. . . I should really write that more eloquently and use it in a paper somewhere, but then again, I should also be writing the paper that's due tomorrow which I haven't even outlined. T_T

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Right there with you. This (admittedly really interesting) conversation has been a great incentive for me to NOT read the sources for my research paper and presentation I have on Wednesday XD

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Bahaha. Uh.

Quick! Converse with me about black humor as a comping mechanism in impoverished Brazil! I require a thesis statement!

. . . or, you know. Not. =D What's your presentation/paper on?

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
...bwuh? That's fairly unique topic XD

My paper/presentation is on Tolkien... Gondor as allegory for Rome, and the entire LotR as an alternate myth for England in which Rome is saved from falling via aid from the Germanic barbarians instead of collapsing. Also talking about Tolkien's castles and how they're influenced by his medieval scholarship and the "castle story."

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well it's more of an anthropological book review, but yes, unique topic.

=D Can I marry you? Lawl.

But seriously. Best paper ever. Are you focusing entirely on Gondor, or does Rohan feature in there anywhere? Because I've heard the argument that Rohan was kind of wish-fulfillment regarding some battle where the English got slaughtered by the French because they had horses or something but either way it was a way more interesting allusion than the standard "OMG TEH RING IS TEH A-BOMB AND SAURON ARE HITLARRR" one that I usually hear.

It's been too long since I read LotR. I'm tempted to make that another winter break project, but I already have a lot planned for doing.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, when's the wedding? (what book if I may ask?)

Well, it's mostly focusing on Gondor as allegory for Rome, but central to that are the other parties. The Rohrrim are the Germanic tribes like the Goths, the Hobbits are the English tribes (and along that, the Elves Welsh and the Dwarves Norse). Osgiliath, as the great capital that has since fallen, is Rome while Minas Tirith, the new capital to the east, is Constantinople. They're menaced by forces from the East that alternatively represent the Huns or the Turks.

The course is about castles and stuff, so I'm TRYING to stay at least centered on that. Gondor--the Romans--are the only ones who really build fortresses and cities from stone. Castles = civilization in a way; everybody else is a barbarian. Hell, with the exception of Barad-dur, all of the castles controlled by the evil forces have been stolen from their rightful Numenorean builders (Orthanc and Minas Morgul, that is)

It should be interesting. We'll see how it goes :P

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Laughter Out of Place: Race, Class, Violence, and Sexuality in a Rio Shantytown." It's by Donna Goldstein and it's about the black humor that serves as a coping mechanism for the severely impoverished Brazilian working class while simultaneously perpetuating class rifts based on a perception of appropriate and inappropriate humor.

. . . I may have my thesis now. =D =D =D

Can I read this paper when it's done? It sounds really interesting and I've been missing LotR recently. =3

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
haha! Glad I could help :P sounds cool~

And sure. It's supposed to be a proposal for a larger (nonexistant) project more than a paper, though.
