Kvothe gets called a Mary Sue

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Kvothe is in his own class of Sue-dom though.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Kvothe and Shallan are not really similar, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
It does go to the argument that people are willing to call male characters Mary Sues.

(I'll be honest, though, when I wrote that I was confused and thought the secret was about that Rhapsody series by Elizabeth Hayden)

I honestly believe that people are starting to call male character Mary Sues recently, but for a good long time it seemed to be mostly female characters who got called sues. and that really sucks. I feel you OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that was Anne Shirley at first glance, and was wondering why anyone would call her a Sue. The Lady Cordelia de Montmorency, on the other hand... ;)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought so too!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't sound irrational.

F*ck the haters.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know nothing about the source material, but people are starting to notice/get sick of male protagonist tropes & cliches. They may not all use the term "Mary Sue" but they recognize the problems.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck the haters, she's awesome.

Stormlight! Shallan! <3 <3

Annnnd now that that's out of my system...

I get your frustration, OP, but I think I may be running in entirely different circles from you, because I don't really see people calling her a Mary Sue. I've come across people who don't like her, but I haven't seen them use "she's a Sue" as part of their criticism.

That said, there is definitely a tendency to dismiss female characters as Sues while giving similar male characters a pass, which is bullshit. Fortunately, as other posters have noted, that seems to be starting to change.

I have no idea what this fandom is, but that artwork is gorgeous. I want to get lost in it.

I don't know who she is, but female characters usually get called "Mary Sue" just for existing and being heroic, and doing things that male character get to do. This pisses me off so much.

So, every time someone calls a female character a "Mary Sue" I just roll my eyes and ignore the haters.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Also Hawke!!! <3 ^_^

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know the fandom but wow, that picture is gorgeous!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I love this pic, but I have to admit it was super disconcerting when I opened FS today and saw that, since I know the artist who drew it, and the last time I saw it was when it was still in the construction phase - http://www.inkthinker.net/

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you know it wound up being the inside "cover" of the book?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, he does a lot of work with Sanderson, and in fact does all the illustrations of Shallan's sketches in the series. He just posted one for the up coming series to his DeviantArt page.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I just want people to use the term "Mary Sue" correctly. ORIGINAL FICTION DOESN'T HAVE MARY SUES. THEY ONLY EXIST IN FANWORKS WHERE A CREATOR INSERTS AN IDEALIZED VERSION OF THEMSELVES INTO THE WORLD OF THEIR FANDOM. THAT SELF INSERT IS THE MARY SUE. BATMAN, KATNISS, JAMES BOND, AND BIG BIRD ARE NOT AND CANNOT BE MARY SUUUUUUUUUES!!!

*GASP*

I'm tired now.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
While I get your anger, Mary Sues definitely exist in original fiction.
If an author inserts an idealised version of themselves into a world of their own making for all the cool characters to fawn over, that's a Mary Sue. Fan environment isn't really a requirement, they're just far more rampant there.

Canon Sue - a Mary Sue that is canon.
