Haven't watched it, don't feel like watching it in the near future, also a lesbian. Yo.

Also like women, also not watching.

You are not alone on any of those counts, OP.

I keep hearing that the L word is pretty bad. I've only seen the first 2 episodes of OINTB and I've liked it so far.

I only saw parts of it, and granted I'm not the target audience, but Shane was really the only one who didn't get on my nerves on a regular basis.

Shane and Carmen is the only reason to watch the L word, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
lol all of my straight family members and friends love this show and I never really got into it (I'm just not into shows that are set in prison). To their credit, none of them have suggested the show to me with the implication that they think I'd enjoy it just because I'm a lesbian.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

L Word is lame though. If you liked it, you'd be a lesbo with shitty taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't expect to like it, but started watching so I could find out what people were talking about. Ended up liking it lots. The show really surprised me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the show, but S2 is kind of...over the top. If you ever do decide to watch it, I'd stick with S1. I'm not sure what being a lesbian or not would have to do with whether you enjoy it, though.

I didn't realize the show was supposed to be a new official lesbian thing like The L Word. I mean I like that there are women who like women on the show but it doesn't feel like such a huge part of the show as this makes it sound like.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's gotten pretty big on Tumblr (even in the non-SJW communities) probably due all of the (pretty well written) female characters and all of the LGBT representation. I'm not very surprised about it becoming labeled as a "gay/bi women show" because I know the women-who-like-women aren't a HUGE part of the show, but I don't think I can say I've seen so many gay and bisexual women in a series before (just fyi, I haven't consumed an enormous amount of LGBT media)

That's true. I guess I'm looking at it out of context.

See, this is why you need more LBGT representation on television and online shows. So, that when you watch a show with LBGT characters on it and you don't like it because the characters are boring or the plot line is badly written, you don't feel guilty for turning it off. You can write it off as simply another bad show.

+1

I actually like oitnb but wish we could see more casts like that in other types of genre fiction like scifi/action shows or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
+1. I happen to like OitNB but I haaaaated The L Word and never made it through a full episode. But I was *right there* for Warehouse 13 and Lost Girl and Orphan Black, even though there were vastly fewer LBT characters. Combining the two would be awesome!

(Yes, I read the entire run Y: The Last Man for the huge range of female characters, even though Yorick himself was dull as shit and the ending made me extremely angry.)

So late to party, but I have to say I'm SO GLAD not to be the only one who thinks of Warehouse 13 in terms of alphabet soup representation on TV.

I hate prison shows *so much*, i just can't make myself watch it, either. Never saw Oz for this reason.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't really compare this show to the L Word. The L Word was more "A lesbian show... that happens to be a show." and OITNB is more "A show... that happens to have lesbians in it."

I'm honestly surprised you're getting crap for being a lesbian and not liking it, because I've seen it more advertised for it's female diversity in general then just the gay subplots.

I love OITNB, but to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel guilty for not liking this or any other show. I will never understand why some people try to cajole other people into liking a show just because there are female characters or LGBT representation. I don't see myself ever watching this show because I don't like prison shows. I don't care how many female characters there are or how accurately they're portrayed because they're all in a setting in which I have no interest.

Don't feel bad and don't waste your time watching something you don't like.

I'm so with this secret, OP.

Also, I think the moment my Lesbian card was revoked was when I liked Queer As Folk and hated The L Word. Apparently, I'm lesbianing wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh The L Word. Back in the day when my main social group were all lesbians and so it was REQUIRED to watch the L Word every week. We had huge parties for it at various people's houses. There wasn't even enough room for everyone to sit in the room. I liked the first season okay, but by season three I wanted to gouge my eyes out. But then I stopped hanging out with that entire group, which was a bummer for my sex life but my quality of television went way up!
