I know what you mean. That type of self insert fic feels very contrived and yet... there's a good reason why people feel the urge to write them, and I can understand that urge.

I feel like it's something that everyone loves to indulge in but nobody wants to read other people's self-inserts.

That's how I tend to look at it too and why my Mary Sues/self-inserts stay in my head.

Personally I think they're adorable when I come across them but seeing the rage they inspire in other people makes me agree with you.

Yeah. To me, it's the kind of thing I might daydream, but I wouldn't bother writing fic about it. It'd never be as meaningful to a reader unless my attempt at the self insert character also fit them.

Ocean's 11 is one of those canons where it's such a sausage fest that I think a female OC or two is fairly forgivable. Genderswaps would be good too.

I was confused for a bit about "joining the gang", because I thought this was a Bourne secret. I think I would love to read bad self-insert fic about Jason Bourne's half sister who is also a Bourne for some reason. it would still be better than Legacy at the least

You are right about the Ocean movies being sausage rolls though. I don't mind it tbh since the first two were pretty fun for me, but yeah.

I honestly don't mind self insert fics if it's DONE WELL. That everyone stays in character and the OC's involvement makes sense.

I'm not personally offended by self-inserts/OCs unless they're not marked as such. If you wanna post it? Go for it, more power to you and there's probably some others who'll want to read it, but for the love of Pete please tag appropriately so people like me can filter it out when they don't want to read it.

These movies have a bunch that could be in on a con - Holly Marie Combs, the dancer, any one of the female dealers, Virgil's fiancé, one of Toulour's women, someone who works at the hotel, a casino patron or dealer.

Cause it wouldn't be self-insert, I guess. But self-inserts never seem like true authorial insertion so much as fantasy fodder about who you wish you could be.

Sometimes I think hating shit means it gets into your head. There are characters I really dislike who I end up writing fic about even while I'm wondering why the hell I'm wasting my time writing about some dumbass character I dislike, but it happens.
