From series executive producer Daniel Cerone:

"Cerone, who analyzed several editions of the character that have been made since it debuted in 1985, suggested that Constantine's sexuality is not a vital facet of his character.

'In those comic books, John Constantine aged in real time," he said, according to Entertainment Weekly. "Within this tome of three decades [of comics] there might have been one or two issues where he's seen getting out of bed with a man. So [maybe] 20 years from now? But there are no immediate plans [to show his biseuality].'"

Ugh, terribly worded. They should have gone with "he's bisexual, but we're not sure about his relationships in the show, but at the moment he prefers women" or just a simple "no".

"Cerone...suggested that Constantine's sexuality is not a vital facet of his character."

That is such an obvious "we don't want to make him gay so stop asking". Like, no subtlety at all.

You know what they will find vital? Giving him UST with a female love interest and at least two sex scenes with someone of the opposite sex. We all know it's going to happen.

Yeah, that's pretty much the most accurate interpretation of the phrase, and I'm calling shenanigans on the entire thing unless they take him through an entire season without even a hint of flirting with, or attraction to a woman, since, y'know, his sexuality isn't important or anything.

Unless he's celibate his sexuality is going to come up at some point. Except of course, straight people mean anything other than straight when they say sexuality.

a little off topic

Somehow this situation reminds me so much of Supernatural and fans making especially Dean into something other than he is. I mean I get it but I'd call it AU if it meant he wasn't attracted to dem ladies. He's the most straight man I've ever seen in a tv show. And that's coming from a big slash fan.

I'd like the show just not touching upon sexuality at all then. Constantine deals with people all the same basically, he teases everyone so at least they shouldn't have to make a big deal of "oh but no, he's only into a certain type"... just let his attitude be "whatever" because he's like that.

I really hate this. His "sexuality is not a vital facet of his character"? If that was really the case, I'd expect them not to include any sexual subplots at all. If they do include them? Well what better chance to include some casual bisexuality to emphasise that hey, it's not an issue for this character.

Seriously. The way that's phrased, it sounds like straight isn't a sexual orientation.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of show runners seem to think that.

Well, of course it isn't. It's the default, y'know.

That sounds like "they didn't show it much in a era where you couldn't show it much so based on that we've decided not to show it at all."

Great.

You could play bi erasure bingo with the shit the showrunners spewed on this. It's not surprising, but it sure is disappointing.
