Tell me your Secrets on how you get your profile pic./icon so good/not terrible quality pictures. I'm making a sort of dummy account on DW, and it turns out that it can only be 40kb and at most 100 pixels square. Specifically, how do you people get icons with words to be not really crappy and readable under those conditions.

You could start with looting icon makers on LJ and DW. I got my steel bemoth icons from google image search with the size parameters at 100x100.

Whatever program you create your icon in, it helps readability a lot to

- turn on "anti-aliasing"
- view the icon actual size before unploading
- try out various fonts, and be mindful of the background when chosing the font color (the more contrast the better, usually)
- be as brief as you can

Well, unless it's a gif, the 100x100 pixel limit makes it pretty easy to keep stuff under 40kb.

Other than that, don't know about other programs, but photoshop has a built anti-aliasing for its fonts. It's what allows you to put in really small text and have it not look all jagged. Although briefer is still better, even with that.

Also, if saving as a .jpg, make sure the compression isn't set low, otherwise icons will look really blurry/artifact'ed. PNG is usually a safe bet.
