Wildlife rescue

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-07-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So last night Zara managed to, somehow, get hold of a bird. One of the grey (collared?) doves that frequents our garden. Don't ask me how, because our feathered visitors are usually smart enough to take off whenever the dogs stick their noses out of the door. It wasn't capable of flying after Zara got hold of it, however, so mum kept it in the unused gerbil cage overnight.

She phoned the RSPCA this morning to ask them what to do with it. We were told to take it to our nearest vet, who works with them quite often. Since my mum was going out, she asked me to walk it there. Which I did.

The receptionist said that if the vet thought it was savable, he'd do what he could and pass it on to a wildlife sanctuary. If not, well...

I'm tempted to pop in tomorrow morning and ask what happened to it.

Just make sure you're okay hearing the worst if you go.

Why not let your dog eat it? It was a good hunter, it deserved it's prize!

My dog caught and ate a mouse one time, and seemed to be feeling pretty proud of himself until the mouse made a sudden and dramatic reappearance on the carpet. Dogs don't always make the best decisions when it comes to what food will agree with them.
