... which was obviously a very contrived plotline because the showrunners decided to kill off her character and take the show in a different direction. (A very dumb move, BTW.) It wasn't just her character they got rid of, but it was the most memorable because she was a fan favorite and because it was just so boneheadedly stupid.

Some sources claim that it was actually Lucy Griffiths' choice, because she wanted out in order to get a Hollywood career going. I don't know which one is true, but I guess it doesn't really matter -- the outcome was the same, either way. (No idea what their rationale for killing Carter was; that was just utterly pointless.)

I always felt especially sorry for Richard Armitage, what with him saying he had nightmares about it.

Lucy Griffiths is on record as saying it was a writer's decision, as is Richard Armitage. After the backlash, the executive (or producers, or whoever) tried to pin Marian's death on Lucy.

The whole thing is pretty unclear, (the guy who wrote the episode, co-producer and creator Dominic Minghella left the show under mysterious circumstances after season 2) and even all these years later no one really knows what the hell was going on BTS.

It didn't feel or sound like the actor's decision at all, it was just too abrupt and out of the blue. You could say that for the whole finale, really. All I can think of is that it must've been an epic screw up in writing/show direction where maybe they realized that the Guy/Marian subplot was a lot stronger (and better acted, tbh) than Robin/Marian or well, anything else and panicked because hello, the series is about Robin Hood.
