Yeah, no. Penny Dreadful just went the same route of "look, we're treating all sexualities equally" that so many shows go - which means all het (and "lesbian") sex scenes are drawn out and bordering on softcore porn while the male/male scenes are conveniently blacked out. In this case, it really looked like "omg, look, bisexual guys, such a shock" without risking anything by actually showing something. Which I wouldn't have minded, had there been no other sex scenes in that show. But there were, so the ~oooh, bisexual character~ thing was a cop-out in my eyes.

Except they clearly did risk something because there was quite a lot of backlash from homophobes, especially because Hartnett's character was shown to be a womanizer before that. I don't know about you, but the majority of american shows I see only have queer baiting (with absolutely no bisexuals in sight), so this was refreshing. Besides, the creator of the show is gay and Reeve Carney has said his relationship with Ethan will be explored more in the future. Don't jump the gun or complain about it not being explicit enough just yet.
