A lot of them are genuinely protective and coming from a place of care, and probably were all along or he wouldn't have cared about Yinsen at all. It's just that all of them are used to power and to being able to dictate circumstances around him, so unless he cares about something on a personal level, it doesn't matter to him, and when he does care it's in an extremely overbearing and 'fix shit now regardless of people's opinions' sort of way.
But yes, as you say, a lot of the fascination is in watching him a) realise this, and b) struggle to overcome it and become a hero.
