I couldn't get past the first episode either because I was waiting for the humor to happen and it never came for me. Also, sex scenes bore me. I'd rather be having sex than watch sex. It's just not my type of show.

I found this show to be more depressing/gut-wrenching with a undercurrent of dark humor than a comedy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, not every "cool thing" has that. Look for different genres.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was more of a comedy, too. Turns out it's... kind of a downer, to be honest. Or at least, it's not funny enough to distract me from how grim and horrible everything is.

I think it's funny that your reasons are none of my own reasons for almost stopping after the first episode. Personally, I just couldn't (still can't) stand the main characters on the show (Piper, Alex, Larry). I wish I could tell you that it gets better and you should stick it out, but honestly, I think the show isn't worth it. It's just in that stage where everyone is talking about it because it's new and different. I'd give it a few years and fewer fucks will be given. Like Glee.

I'm not even trying it because I know it would squick me too much.

Then you truly are "old" and that's a tragedy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the first season, but as far as I can remember, most episodes don't have sex or nudity. I know the first episode had some, and there's a few brief sex scenes sprinkled around and very occasional nakedness, but it wasn't as porny as I had been led to believe.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, GoT had more graphic sex scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of people are squeamish but I'm a bit surprised OITNB got to you that much. I hardly consider the sex scenes graphic at all (maybe more then you're used to seeing from lesbian scenes? I've seen much more in straight sex scenes) and very little I consider too much to watch. Sometimes the jokes are a bit much, but I consider OITNB pretty tame compared to most major cable dramas.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I completely understand. I've never watched OITNB, but I've had to give up on shows or never start them in the first place because I really hate gory/gross stuff and graphic sex. It's nothing to be embarrassed about because everyone has their own tolerances and likes/dislikes. As for being too old, if not wanting to watch graphic sex or violence makes you an old fogey, I've been one my entire life.

I'm personally rejoicing that my local Fox station will be showing The Walking Dead this fall in syndication because given how heavily they edit, the gore will be gone so I'll be able to watch it. Now if only they'd pick up Game of Thrones.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't remember any sex I'd consider seriously graphic in OITNB. It wasn't like you were shown all the nasty bits or anything during sex. I think people are just accusing it of being graphic because it has lesbian sex scenes, to be totally honest. If they were all straight, no one would be saying anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Unless people are really squeamish about nudity (which some people are) I'd also guess it's the fact that the majority of the scenes are lesbian sex scenes. If you really watch the scenes Natasha Lyonne is typically about 5 miles away from anyone's genitals.

Lesbian sex scenes are not common on major television though, so maybe the uncomfortable feeling people are having is just because they aren't used to it (I'm trying to give people the benefit of the doubt.)

... except for that first episode (the only one OP saw, apparently) where she was eating out and fingering another woman against the shower wall in full view AND while leering at the main character. I don't think I'm squeamish, but something about that made me wince, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, she's pretty far from anyone's genitals in that scene as well. I don't blame you if you were shocked, I think it gave me a bit of a "wow" the first time I watched it too but upon rewatch I realized there wasn't even really much going on and it all looked pretty fake.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
da - It wasn't really "proximity to genitals" or "realistic looking sex" that bothered me about that scene, though. It was the way it was super public and that Natasha Lyonne's character thought it was funny to shock passers by with the sight. I have nothing against oral sex, but neither do I expect to walk into a bathroom and see two strangers hard at it.

OP isn't alone, I found it difficult to handle how grim and humiliating the experience (of jail in general) was for Piper. I guess I embarrass easily though I try not to show it. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of this, thank goodness I'm not alone.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
You're definitely prudish.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom is a prison guard, and I can't watch because the first episode was so realistic. power abusing guards, weird relationships within the prisoners and their hierarchies. I could just talk to my mom and get all the same sad, sad feelings.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The embarrassment thing doesn't get better.

I tried watching it, the sex stuff didn't bother me at all, but holy crap the embarrassment squick triggers. I couldn't make it more than halfway through the first season (the episode with the election is the last one I saw).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an old, and one of the biggest fans I know of this - the person who turned me on to it - is 76. So, it's not that you're old.
