Attraction

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Does "attraction" always automatically mean sexual? Or could it be like...emotional/mental/intellectual attraction or being attracted to someone's personality or something? Is that a thing?

I'm Asexual, so all I have is emotional attraction, ha! But yes, you can sexually attracted to someone and not be emotionally attracted and visa versa.

No. Yes. Yes.

A straight person could have platonic attraction to the personality of another person of their gender, so they become best friends. It doesn't have to be sex.

Attraction as a word has too many sexual connotations for it ever to be non-sexual to me, but I definitely think you can be interested in people for other reasons.

This. I can think of it as something else, but my mind will always go to sexual as a default.

Well, there is this thing called friendship. You may have heard of it. That means you are attracted to someone else's personality. No sex involved!

No, it doesn't.

You can be romantically & emotionally attracted to them. Intellectually attracted, yes. You can be attracted to their personality. And intellectually/personality attraction with romantic attraction too. If you're attracted to their personality and mind, it might make you fall for them/develop romantic feelings for them.

Yes, their appearance would come into it too, but not in a sexual way. You just like how they look, you can think they look cute, good-looking, giggle about how hot they are and get flustered without it being sexual. They can be attractive to you without it being sexual.

Well, my answer is limited to myself only I guess.

SA

limited only is a weird way I worded it. I meant that I was answering for myself.

I think it can also be applied to magnets and atoms.

And black holes.

And tourist traps.

I tend to misconstrue attraction as sexual at first, then I usually realize later it's mental/emotional/intellectual attraction. Sometimes though, the attraction is only sexual.

So, no, it's not always sexual.

Depends on how you phrase it. "____ attracts my attention." might not automatically mean it's a sexual thing if it's referring to a person. For example, "I like mohawks on people because they really attract my attention."

Saying "I'm attracted to..." or "I find ____ attractive." is pretty much always assumed to be sexual though.

Attraction can be sexual, romantic, platonic, or even just aesthetic. Usually when people talk about attraction in general they mean sexual and/or romantic, but technically the word can apply to many different things.

Sure it's a thing. Doesn't seem unusual at all, to me.

I generally assume that when people say "I'm attracted/not attracted to this person" without any context, they mean attracted in a physical - but not necessarily sexual - way. Sex comes into it because the majority of people have at least some interest in sex and sex is a very physical act, so physical appeal is often an issue with sex. Interest in sex, however, is not required for attraction. It's also perfectly proper to say "I'm attracted to this person's personality/brain/history of cool deeds/bank account" and not bring physical aesthetics into it at all.
