How could there be any reasonable basis for plausibility or realism when you're talking about the severed hand of an immortal alien race traveling through time

Every fictional universe has its own rules, and things are believable in that universe as long as they fit those rules. In this case, I think it is questionable. Doesn't quite cross the line for me, but I can see why others would think so.

Basically this. Really don't like that "but it's fantasy" argument. Fantasy worlds need to be consistent in order for them to work, man!

Ehhhhh kinda disagree with this. IMO fantasy (or whatever genre you're talking about) has to have narrative consistency, but I think that's mostly aesthetic, tonal, etc. I don't think having a coherent system of rules is necessary or helpful for most works, and I think usually it comes down to "because it's a fucking dragon, it's magic" anyway - I mean, ultimately, all systems of rules or world building are equally arbitrary except insofar as they shape the story.

So, like, in this case, unless it majorly upsets a really well built up element of the story or the tone or the setting, I don't think it needs an explanation beyond Weird Alien Physics.

Ah. For my part, I think the rules matter when it comes to consistency. Sure, they're arbitrary, but they're part of the world in which the story takes place. And if you don't intend to follow them, then you shouldn't establish them to begin with.

I do agree that there doesn't need to be an explanation beyond "well magic," but I think "explanation" and "rules" are distinct. I don't need to know how or why dragons exist and can do the things that they do, but if you tell me that dragons can only do X and then suddenly have them do Y, then you'd better be able to clear up the discrepancy.

(Also, I have the feeling that, based on your second paragraph, we actually agree, but that I may just have poorly worded my initial comment)

Very true. I mean I Jack being unable to stay dead can handwave a lot. I can even handwave Jack's clothes surviving At least as far as Doctor Who goes (Torchwood's a different story), but that hand was in a metal container. Similar to the one that broke when that girl threw it to the ground in a first season Torchwood episode. Ergo, it's always a wonder to me how the hell it survived Jack's trip outside the TARDIS.
