Re: Things you've been thinking about lately

Weirdly, it's not stuff like Minaj or Beiber that bugs me. That kind of stuff will always be there and it's often good!

It's some of the other stuff that I think is garbage -- for example the "underground" stuff, the stuff that "isn't mainstream" but is just as cookiecutter as the rest. It's pointless to bash Nicki Minaj. Nobody cares, and doing it just makes you look like a try-hard. Counterculture has become a culture in and of itself and honestly trying too hard to "not be a sellout" stopped mattering when they took punk rock out behind the woodshed shortly before the new wave revival of the early 2000s. This is partly why I can't stand dubstep -- it's become the go-to dance music, the "edgy" techno for a new generation when the last generation hasn't even finished arguing over whether IDM was pretentious or not. And I think I've finally hit my limit when it comes to music for younger folks. When I was 25, stuff that was for 17 year olds sounded pretty good to me. Now that I'm 31, those 17 year olds are now 23, and the new stuff for 17 year olds is basically shit like this.

I'm just going to listen to synthpop and tell everyone my favourite band is anyone who outsells Morrissey.

I can completely understand losing patience with "underground" and "indie" music and the crowds that flock to them. It all gets tiring for the same reason that hipsters are obnoxious: you've got a bunch of people trying so hard not to conform that they wind up cycling back around to hyper-conformity. They're everything that they hate, but they think that they're not, and they're dicks about it.

I guess the thing for me is that, even though there's stuff that I hate and think is awful (what is this thing you have linked to, I don't even know what's happening with that), I just don't get as bothered as I used to by other people liking it. Attitude gets under my skin; taste doesn't.

Also, I think it's normal to reach a point where you stop "getting" the stuff that younger people are into. I'm a bit younger than you at 28, but I've noticed that I've gotten to where I'm less likely to enjoy what's currently popular with people in their teens and early 20s. There are exceptions, of course.
