I think it's a few things.

For Maleficent (versus Ursula, the Queen, or Cruella de Ville) - appearance, presence, voice, design (Sleeping Beauty had a really wonderful aesthetic), and possibly some nostalgia.

For Gaston - appearance, voice, a weirdly catchy song (don't discount the power of this), the movie itself (popular, well-received, and well-done), and possibly some nostalgia.
