More power to you, OP. I guess someone has to read it.
philstar22: (Doctor 10 to 11)

I totally get it, OP. I won't personally read them if they are out of character, but there is a reason Vincent and the Doctor is my favorite Doctor Who episode. Stories like this are increadibly cathartic.

HAH! SAME HERE OP! I wouldn't admit it ever, as I'm known for reading none fluffy stuff :P .

It's even better if it's an unrequired lurve and the emo party does best to drive someone away. Ahhhh...

Damn, I should just read harlequinns...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Those are the best. Add in a little hurt/comfort and I'm in fanfic heaven.

Hopefully the OP or someone else will swoop in with recs.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
SA. YESSSS.... Totally needs recs :D ! MANY RECS! Honestly, those fics are so hard to track...

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely have a soft spot for it. But I prefer it to be in character. Which is probably why I still read SPN fic, ah ahahaha.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Between this secret and it coming up on a couple song clip quizzes I was doing earlier, I am now going to have Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" in my head all day.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This would probably be ooc for most characters, and if it weren't, then I'd probably hate the fandom in the first place. But I'm glad (no sarcasm whatsoever) you found something to enjoy about it, OP. At least it has a redeeming value!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck, yes. I love that stuff too, IC or...less so. My particular poison is "I'm a monster!!" angst, but any kind of insecurity+comfort like that is good. "I'm a whore"-based angst is another one I like so much it's shameful. I don't know what it says about me, but I love it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm a monster!" angst is the best kind of angst.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Are you in my fandoms, that sound like my fandoms :D + INFINITY ON THAT

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
What are your fandoms~? :D

This is a guilty pleasure of mine, OP, ngl. However, it only works when I'm in the right mood, and only when the author gets the tone juuuuuuust right. It has to really be written as emotional catharsis, not dressed up in fancy trying-to-be-all-mature-and-serious clothes.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2014-07-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get the appeal of that kind of story.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Totally a guilty pleasure of mine, I admit it. The deeper the self-loathing spiral goes, the more I love it. But it does have to end happily. That's my stipulation with angst in general, haha.

Recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Several people upthread have said that they enjoy these fics when done right, and personally I'm always in the mood for well-written fic using this trope. Anyone have recs to share? :D

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I am all over those kinds of stories.

I'm curious about the image source *googles* *is missing the point*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is my favorite too, especially if the character's self-loathing is motivated by things they did or their mistakes or something along those lines. It's nice to read fics where someone still loves them and forgiveness is possible.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Read the Nick Seafort Saga by David Feintuch. This is the ultimate apogee of this trope and it is BRILLIANT. You will LOVE it.

RIGHT THERE WITH YOU, OP

I sometimes find myself in a mood where that's exactly what I need to read-- though I get turned off by things that are *wildly* OOC. It can be incredibly cathartic when I'm depressed and feel like a gross, unlovable loser, to read about someone getting the reassurance that I don't know how to ask for. /shrug

It's been a while since I've seen anything, I remember it mostly cropping up in fandoms I was in back in high school/starting college, so I don't know where to begin rec'ing things that aren't badly written, so sorry about that, but I hope you can find some in-character outpourings of angst and steadfast sources of comfort to meet them!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, that sort of fic is usually way too OOC for my tastes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Caring for someone in real life who occasionally does this, I couldn't possibly find it enjoyable, but to each their own, I suppose.
