Re: SPOILERS ALL

I dunno, there's an argument that being a villain is more subversive, especially on the level Dany would be: one of the last of an ancient royal bloodline, dragon-keepers, with the expectation that she (or another Targaryen) could always reclaim the Iron Throne, savior to the poor and humble, that whole arch from being a powerless girl to the Mother of Dragons... and then it turns out she's not the benign conqueror people thought she'd be, but falls prey to the madness of the Targaryens when all along readers thought she'd escaped it since Viserys was the bad guy. In many ways, that subverts expectations than noble, stoic, honorable Eddard Stark hoisted by his own petard and beheaded before he can do much of anything at all.

Sorry, I know that was a mess, but I'm mostly talking about Dany becoming evil and Jon killing her and becoming king. Jon becoming king is not subversive, I think.

It's true Dany has a number of cliches attached to her, but I do feel she definitely fulfills them in a more creative way than Jon fulfills his. Jon, however, is basically made of stereotypes. A heroic bastard with a secret past of actually being a lost prince (who is prophesied to save the world), is noble and dutiful and earns the trust and loyalty of the special organization he joins through his awesome leadership abilities and is the best at the sword and even gets a special rare sword and a special direwolf and special powers (warging AND probably dragon affinity), and becomes the youngest leader of his secret organization after being right about basically everything above his stupid, selfish, greedy superiors, but is ultimately betrayed but will rise up and fulfill his prophesy.

Also had a hot-tempered redheaded girlfriend.

Now, I don't dislike Jon. I also don't think ASOIAF has ever been about being subversive for the sake of subversion. Clearly things are being set up for Jon to do even greater things. Fine, I accept that.

But it's the fandom that bugs me.

Sorry for the rant!

ayrt

GAH major reading comprehension fail on my part, sorry about that. Um... never mind me, I'm just going to take a break until my brain reboots. :)

No I wrote it weird. Plus I got a rant out of it, so honestly, you helped!

I really hope Jon is forever stuck as Ghost or comes back "wrong" like Cat in the next book. Anything else (such as him coming back as Azor Ahai or the savior of Westeros) would make him the worst character ever. But let's face it, that's probably not going to happen :/
