There were only 3 things that I liked that Sims 3 did and they were largely QoL changes.

1) Create-A-Style (which has now been removed form Sims 4 in favor for game optimization...)
2) No loading screens. It was annoying in Sims 2 when you had an average PC (for the times) and every time you wanted to use the Nightlife lots in the city you'd have to wait for the loading screen.
3) Like you said, the stories that happened simultaneously instead of in their own bubble.

Other than those things, I enjoyed Sims 2 content more.
